Celebrating Traditional Education in Nagaland

Guwahati, Mar 29: On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the Morung learning system of Nagaland, emphasizing its potential to spark interest in subjects such as Mathematics and Science among children.

During his monthly radio program, Mann Ki Baat, Modi noted the Naga community's commitment to preserving their heritage while also embracing modern educational practices.

He highlighted the respect the Naga people have for their tribal customs, which coexist with contemporary approaches to learning.

The Prime Minister explained that the Morung learning system involves elders imparting traditional knowledge, history, and essential life skills to the youth through their personal experiences.

"This educational model has transformed over time into the Morung concept, fostering children's interest in subjects like mathematics and science," he stated.

The Morung system serves as a community-based educational framework, often referred to as a bachelor's dormitory, which acts as a hub for social, cultural, and life skills education.

Modi elaborated that through this system, community elders teach life skills using stories, folk songs, and traditional games.

"This approach allows Nagaland to enhance children's education while safeguarding its cultural legacy. If you come across similar initiatives in your region, I encourage you to share them with me," he added.

Additionally, Modi highlighted an inspiring initiative from Chizami village in Nagaland, where local women are working together to preserve over 150 varieties of traditional seeds in a community seed bank managed by themselves.

These seeds include rice, millet, maize, pulses, vegetables, and various herbs, representing an effort to maintain knowledge, sustain traditions, and build a solid foundation for future generations.

"In today's world, facing challenges like climate change, such initiatives remind us that solutions can often be found within our own traditional knowledge and community efforts," he remarked.
