Prime Minister Modi Expresses Concern for Khaleda Zia's Health
Modi Offers Support to Khaleda Zia
On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his deep concern regarding the health of former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, offering any necessary assistance. In a post on the social media platform X, Modi stated, "I am very worried to hear about Begum Khaleda Zia's health, who has contributed significantly to Bangladesh's public life over the years."
Wishes for a Swift Recovery
The Prime Minister added, "Our prayers are with her for a speedy recovery. India is ready to provide all possible support." Khaleda Zia, the chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), was admitted to a private hospital on November 23 due to a chest infection that affected her heart and lungs.
Khaleda Zia in Critical Condition
The 80-year-old Khaleda Zia was moved to the coronary care unit after her health deteriorated following her admission. A local news portal reported that according to BNP Vice-Chairman Advocate Ahmed Azam Khan, Zia's condition has worsened, and she is now on ventilation. Outside Evercare Hospital in Dhaka, he told reporters, "Her condition is very critical. There is nothing we can do but pray for her recovery."
Medical Updates and Health Issues
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir confirmed that Zia's condition remains critical and that she is receiving treatment from both local and international medical specialists. Alamgir stated, "She is very ill. The entire country is praying for her recovery... Our doctors are doing everything possible, and specialists are involved in her treatment."
Zia's Ongoing Health Struggles
Zia faces multiple health issues, including liver and kidney problems, diabetes, arthritis, and eye-related ailments. Earlier this year, she returned to Bangladesh after spending four months in London for advanced medical treatment.
Political Context and Family Concerns
BNP's acting chairman, Tarique Rahman, has been residing in London since 2008, and his other son, Arafat Rahman, passed away from a cardiac arrest earlier this year. On Sunday, Tarique hinted at uncertainties regarding his return, especially with his mother in critical condition in Dhaka. He mentioned on Facebook that returning to Bangladesh is "not entirely" within his control, leading to speculation about potential political or legal obstacles.
