Prime Minister Modi Emphasizes Development in Sikkim's Tourism Sector

Gangtok, April 29: On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaffirmed his administration's dedication to the 'Act East' initiative, emphasizing the need to 'Act Fast' for the eight Northeastern states, which he referred to as India's 'Ashtalakshmi', symbolizing diverse prosperity and auspiciousness.
Highlighting the significance of tourism in Sikkim's economy, Modi stated that enhancing connectivity is crucial for attracting more visitors to the state.
During a 35-minute address at Paljor Stadium, marking the conclusion of Sikkim's 50 years of statehood celebrations, he mentioned plans to improve infrastructure, including an expressway from Bagdogra in West Bengal and a ring road in Gangtok to facilitate tourist access.
Additionally, he announced upcoming projects such as ropeways and skyways, along with an expressway in Nathula aimed at boosting tourist numbers.
“The Northeast, particularly Sikkim, is India's 'Ashtalakshmi'. Our government is committed to acting swiftly and effectively,” Modi stated. He praised Sikkim's rich biodiversity, noting, “The state's clean roads and pure air reflect the residents' commitment to nature conservation.”
Modi expressed confidence that the Northeast, including Sikkim, is poised to become a center for sustainable growth and development through initiatives like organic farming.
He commended Sikkim as a peaceful and spiritually rich destination, encouraging tourists to explore the Himalayan region extensively.
“Sikkim offers vast potential for eco-wellness tourism, which is being actively promoted by the government. We are establishing 1,000 homestays and enhancing infrastructure for adventure tourism,” the Prime Minister added.
