Modi's Strong Remarks on Murshidabad Violence
In his first public statement regarding the Murshidabad riots, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a sharp critique against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, labeling her government as ruthless. He accused Trinamool Congress (TMC) councilors of identifying homes to be set ablaze. This comment came weeks after communal violence erupted in the Samserganj and Dhulian areas on April 11 and 12, following the Waqf Amendment Act. The riots resulted in three fatalities and numerous injuries.
During his address, Modi remarked that the events in Murshidabad and Malda exemplify the brutality of the TMC government. He stated that the people of Bengal no longer trust the TMC administration, asserting that they now rely solely on the courts for justice. He emphasized that the cries of the people in Bengal reflect their rejection of a ruthless government, stating, 'The government has allowed thuggery in the name of appeasement.' He painted a grim picture of a situation where members of the ruling party identify and burn down homes while the police remain passive.
Modi questioned the governance of Bengal, asking the impoverished citizens if this is how a government should operate. He noted that every issue necessitates court intervention, indicating a lack of resolution otherwise. He criticized the TMC for ruining the futures of thousands of teachers during its tenure and for pushing many poor families into despair. Modi highlighted that elderly citizens across the country are entitled to free medical treatment up to ₹5 lakh, expressing his desire for similar provisions for seniors in West Bengal, which he claimed the TMC government obstructs.
Furthermore, Modi referenced the anger in West Bengal following the brutal actions of terrorists in Pahalgam on April 22. He acknowledged the public's outrage and expressed understanding of their feelings. He condemned the terrorists for their audacity to harm women and praised the military for demonstrating the strength of their resolve. He asserted that they have destroyed terrorist strongholds that even Pakistan could not have imagined. Modi concluded by stating that Pakistan has contributed nothing positive to the world since its inception, only fostering terrorism.
