Prime Minister Modi Commemorates Holocaust Victims at Yad Vashem
Modi's Visit to Yad Vashem
Jerusalem, Feb 26: On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid a visit to the Yad Vashem World Holocaust Remembrance Centre in Jerusalem, where he laid a wreath to honor the victims of the Holocaust.
During his visit, PM Modi was joined by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Yad Vashem Chairman Dani Dayan. Together, they explored the Holocaust Memorial and Museum, which serves to document and commemorate the tragic events of the Holocaust.
The tour included a visit to the Book of Names, a significant installation that lists the names of 4.8 million Jewish victims, and a memorial ceremony held in the Hall of Remembrance. Additionally, PM Modi signed the guest book at Yad Vashem.
This marks PM Modi's second visit to Yad Vashem, having previously visited the memorial in July 2017 during his last trip to Israel.
Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), shared on X, "Honoring the memory of Holocaust victims and reaffirming our commitment to peace and human dignity. PM Modi visited Yad Vashem, marking his second visit. He laid a wreath and paid tribute to the victims, also visiting the significant Book of Names Hall, which preserves the memory of millions lost during the Holocaust."
He further emphasized, "The memorial serves as a solemn reminder of past atrocities and our collective determination to combat injustice and foster a better world."
Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu had also accompanied PM Modi during his previous visit to the memorial in 2017.
Reflecting on his earlier visit, PM Modi wrote in the Yad Vashem Guest Book on July 3, 2017, "I am profoundly moved by my visit to the Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial museum. It stands as a poignant reminder of the unspeakable evil inflicted generations ago and symbolizes the resilience of the Jewish people. In confronting conflict, intolerance, hatred, and terror today, Yad Vashem reflects the societal challenges we face globally. By remembering the past, we empower future generations to make compassionate and just choices."
Currently, PM Modi is on a two-day State Visit to Israel, where he received a warm welcome from Netanyahu in Tel Aviv on Wednesday. He also addressed a Special Plenary of the Knesset in Jerusalem, marking the first address by an Indian Prime Minister at the Israeli parliament.
