New Delhi, June 5: On the occasion of World Environment Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his best wishes to the public and commended those committed to environmental preservation.

In a post on the social media platform X, he stated, “Warm greetings to everyone on World Environment Day. I commend all individuals dedicated to environmental conservation. This day serves as a reminder of our pledge to safeguard our environment while promoting sustainable growth. The Government's initiatives over the past decade underscore our commitment in this area, with notable achievements such as increased green cover and a rise in various animal populations. The collective efforts of the Indian populace demonstrate how policies, scientific belief, and innovation can enhance our environment.”

World Environment Day, celebrated every year on June 5, aims to raise awareness about environmental challenges and inspire action to protect the planet. Spearheaded by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), it has emerged as one of the largest global platforms for environmental advocacy and public involvement.

The inception of World Environment Day dates back to the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment held in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1972. This conference was pivotal in placing ecological issues at the forefront of global policy discussions.

Subsequently, the United Nations officially established June 5 as World Environment Day, with the inaugural celebration occurring in 1973.

This day serves as a crucial reminder of the environmental issues facing the world today, such as climate change, pollution, loss of biodiversity, and depletion of natural resources. It encourages individuals, communities, businesses, and governments to embrace sustainable practices and contribute to environmental protection.

Over the years, World Environment Day has transformed into a global movement, engaging more than 150 countries. Activities like tree-planting initiatives, beach clean-ups, educational programs, and policy actions are organized worldwide. Each year, a host nation is chosen, and a specific theme is highlighted to address a significant environmental concern.

While governmental and organizational efforts are vital for environmental conservation, individual actions are equally crucial. Simple measures such as minimizing waste, conserving water, utilizing public transport, planting trees, and adopting sustainable lifestyles can collectively lead to significant positive impacts.
