New Delhi, June 28: During his monthly radio address 'Mann Ki Baat', Prime Minister Narendra Modi commended the living root bridges of Meghalaya, highlighting them as a stunning representation of the synergy between humanity and nature. He called for collective efforts to safeguard this unique heritage and support the initiative for UNESCO World Heritage status.

Modi emphasized that Meghalaya is not only famous for its breathtaking scenery and clouds but also for the warmth and hospitality of its inhabitants.

He pointed out that the living root bridges are among India's most remarkable natural and cultural assets, crafted over decades by skillfully directing the roots of rubber trees across streams, unlike traditional bridges.

According to PM Modi, "These living bridges grow stronger over time, showcasing the creativity, patience, and profound respect for nature exhibited by the people of Meghalaya."

The Prime Minister described these structures as invaluable heritage, illustrating what can be achieved when humanity collaborates with nature. He announced that India has submitted an application to include these bridges in the UNESCO World Heritage Site list.

Addressing the threats posed by climate change, Modi noted that local communities have taken proactive measures to protect the delicate ecosystem surrounding the bridges.

He mentioned that residents have taken the initiative to identify and document the bridges, as there was previously no comprehensive record of them.

Currently, local communities are responsible for the upkeep of over 120 living root bridges, with dedicated teams conducting annual inspections and some establishing nurseries to enhance the surrounding environment.

PM Modi also recognized Padma awardee Hally War for his five-decade commitment to preserving the living root bridges, calling his dedication an inspiration for the nation.

He encouraged visitors of the root bridges to share their experiences and photographs on social media, stating that such actions would promote awareness and appreciation of Meghalaya's distinctive natural heritage.
