Government Collaboration for Flood Relief

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that the central government is collaborating with the Assam government to provide relief to those affected by flooding in the state. This statement followed a meeting with Assam's central ministers and BJP MPs at the Parliament complex. So far this year, floods have claimed the lives of 68 individuals. In a post on 'X', Modi shared insights from his discussions with Assam's MPs regarding the current flood situation across various regions of the state. He expressed his prayers for the safety and well-being of all citizens.

Impact of Flooding in Assam

The meeting included participation from Sarbananda Sonowal, the Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, and Minister of State for External Affairs, Pabitra Margherita. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), six districts—Sivasagar, Golaghat, Charideo, Jorhat, Nagaon, and Kamrup (Metro)—have been severely impacted, affecting approximately 445,495 individuals. Currently, there are 90 relief camps operational, providing shelter to 28,695 people, along with 94 centers distributing relief materials.

Rescue Operations Underway

As per the bulletin, various agencies, including NDRF, SDRF, and Civil Defense personnel, are actively engaged in rescue and relief operations, with 67 boats deployed in the affected areas. ASDMA reported that 37,139.52 hectares of agricultural land remain submerged, and 26,679 livestock have been lost. There have been reports of damage to homes, roads, and other infrastructure in different parts of the affected districts.

Improvement in Flood Conditions

Officials indicated that the flood situation has improved as of Tuesday, with no new fatalities reported and water levels receding in several districts. A central team visited Sivasagar, one of the worst-hit districts, to assess the conditions in the eastern parts of the state.
