President Droupadi Murmu Honors Public Sector Achievements with SCOPE Eminence Awards

In a significant event held in New Delhi, President Droupadi Murmu presented the SCOPE Eminence Awards for 2022-23, celebrating the vital contributions of public sector enterprises to India's growth. The awards recognize excellence across various dimensions, including sustainable development and corporate governance. Notably, A. Manimekhalai, the first woman to lead Union Bank of India, was among the honorees. The President highlighted the essential role of public sector enterprises in driving economic development and social inclusion, emphasizing their importance in national initiatives and technological advancements. This event underscores the commitment to achieving a developed India by 2047.
 

Celebrating Public Sector Contributions


New Delhi, Aug 29: The President of India, Droupadi Murmu, awarded the SCOPE Eminence Awards for the year 2022-23 in New Delhi on Friday.


During her address, the President emphasized that these awards recognize the vital role public sector enterprises play in India's development.


She noted that excellence across various dimensions—social, economic, environmental, technological, and ethical—is essential for a successful enterprise. The President commended SCOPE for acknowledging outstanding performance in areas such as sustainable development, corporate governance, corporate social responsibility, and innovation.


One of the notable awardees was A. Manimekhalai, the former Managing Director and CEO of Union Bank of India. In June 2022, she made history as the first woman to lead the bank since its inception in 1919, and she was the only female head of a public sector bank at that time. Her leadership came during a significant transition following the merger with Andhra Bank and Corporation Bank.


The President remarked that since Independence, the public sector has served as a crucial driver for economic growth and social inclusion.


Public Sector Enterprises have established the groundwork for industrialization, infrastructure enhancement, social upliftment, and equitable regional development. She highlighted that beyond their economic contributions, these enterprises prioritize inclusive growth while aligning with national objectives.


The President praised Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs) for their impactful involvement in national initiatives like Aatmanirbhar Bharat and 'Make in India.'


She mentioned that during Operation Sindoor, the indigenous Air Defence Control and Reporting System, Akashteer, showcased its exceptional capabilities, underscoring the role of Public Sector Enterprises in developing this system.


Furthermore, the President acknowledged the significant contributions of public enterprises towards self-reliant innovations in national security and India's advancing technological independence. CPSEs have been pivotal in key sectors such as agriculture, mining, manufacturing, processing, and services.


She concluded by stating that CPSEs will be instrumental in realizing the national vision of a developed India by 2047.


The SCOPE Eminence Awards, established by the Standing Conference of Public Enterprises, aim to honor the outstanding achievements and contributions of Public Sector Enterprises.
