Key Meeting Held to Ensure Smooth Conduct of Ambubachi Mela

On the evening of June 6, Chief Secretary Ravi Kota convened a crucial review meeting with various departments to evaluate the preparations for the Ambubachi Mela, which is set to take place from June 22 to 26 at the Kamakhya Temple.

Post-meeting, the Chief Secretary announced that the Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup Metro will be in charge of the overall arrangements, including the deployment of volunteers at all camps, the Kamakhya foothills, the hilltop, and the access routes.

The Guwahati Commissioner of Police will oversee law enforcement, crowd control, traffic management, CCTV monitoring, and the coordination of pilgrim movement from Pandu to the temple. Additionally, the Commissioner will arrange for volunteers from Civil Defence, NCC, and Scouts.

Given the rainfall predictions from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the GMC, ASDMA, and GIS teams have been assigned to jointly monitor landslide-prone areas, especially walkways and roads, and to conduct regular inspections.

The review meeting also finalized several actionable points, including:

  • PWD (Building): Ensure that pilgrim camps are operational by June 20, with fans, lighting, shaded areas along access roads, and necessary signage installed.
  • PHE: Build and maintain sufficient toilets and bathing facilities at all camps.
  • GMC: Ensure sanitation in temple premises and camps, provide road lighting, drinking water, and deploy adequate manpower.
  • Health & Family Welfare Department: Establish medical camps, deploy doctors and paramedics, stock medicines and ORS, ensure emergency services (108), and provide stretchers and wheelchairs.
  • ASTC: Arrange for enough buses to transport pilgrims to and from designated pick-up points.
  • Tourism Department: Set up help desks at camps and railway stations.
  • PWD (Roads): Facilitate smooth pedestrian movement from Pandu Point to Kamakhya Hilltop; repair drains and ensure round-the-clock monitoring.
  • APDCL: Guarantee an uninterrupted power supply.
  • PWD (Electrical): Inspect electrical infrastructure, ensure safety of connections, and provide lighting on access roads.
  • District Commandant: Ensure adequate deployment of Home Guards.
  • Fire & Emergency Services: Position fire tenders 24/7 at all camps and critical locations.
  • DCP Traffic & DTOs: Coordinate transportation and manage vehicle movement.
  • Doloi of Kamakhya Temple: Collaborate with all departments for seamless execution.

Earlier this week, on Tuesday, Tourism Minister Ranjit Kumar Dass announced that the government has allocated ₹4.55 crore to facilitate the smooth execution of the Ambubachi Mela.
