Prem Kumar's Unopposed Election as Speaker

Prem Kumar has been unanimously elected as the 18th Speaker of the Bihar Assembly, receiving support even from opposition legislators. He submitted his nomination for the position yesterday and was the sole candidate, making his election uncontested. Following Vijay Kumar Sinha and Nandkishor Yadav, he becomes the third Speaker from the BJP quota. Prior to him, the position was held by two leaders from the JD(U), Uday Narayan Choudhary and Vijay Kumar Choudhary.

Congratulatory Messages and Expectations

Upon his election, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar congratulated Prem Kumar, stating, "I extend my congratulations on behalf of the entire house. He has extensive experience and will contribute significantly to the proceedings of the assembly." He requested all members to stand in honor of the new Speaker, although some opposition leaders were gently reprimanded for remaining seated until they eventually stood up with smiles.

In his address, Tejashwi Yadav highlighted that the Speaker represents a constituency rich in pilgrimage sites associated with Lord Vishnu and Lord Buddha. He remarked that the opposition serves as a mirror for the government, which may not always recognize its shortcomings. Therefore, he expressed hope that the Speaker would involve the opposition more than the ruling party.

The newly elected Speaker thanked all members for their trust and expressed his anticipation for their cooperation.

Upcoming Elections and Assembly Proceedings

Before adjourning the session for the day, he emphasized the necessity of electing a vice-chairperson for the smooth functioning of the assembly, announcing that the election would take place on December 4. Bihar Minister Ramkripal Yadav stated that Prem Kumar's unanimous election reflects his long tenure and gentle demeanor, assuring that he would enhance the dignity of the Speaker's office. Minister Nitin Naveen added that Prem Kumar hails from the sacred land of Gaya and possesses significant experience in assembly matters, congratulating him on behalf of the entire house.
