Power Crisis Resolved in Gurugram After Transformer Blast
Gurugram's Power Supply Restored Following Transformer Incident
A significant power crisis that struck Gurugram's Cyber City on Friday night due to a technical failure and explosion at the main transformer has been completely resolved as of Saturday, May 23, 2026. Senior officials from the electricity department have confirmed that power supply has been restored in all affected areas, and the situation is now fully under control.
The crisis began around 7:50 PM when a fire erupted in the main transformer at the 220 KVA power station located in Sector 72.
Explosion Caused by Oil Leakage and Thermal Heating
Anil Malik, Executive Engineer (XEN) of the South Haryana Power Distribution Corporation (DHBVN), along with PRO Sandeep Chugh, provided technical insights into the incident.
The cause was identified as an unexpected oil leak in the 220 KVA transformer circuit. The rising temperatures due to extreme heat exacerbated the situation.
The leak escalated rapidly, leading to a powerful explosion just before the operator could trip the breaker to prevent a fire.
City Plunged into Darkness
The explosion resulted in a complete power outage affecting seven power stations connected to the 220 KV substation, plunging a large part of Gurugram into darkness.
Affected Areas and Metro Services
The blast caused an immediate blackout in several areas, including Sector 15, 38, 44, 46, 52, and 56, leaving the entire region in darkness.
The power outage also impacted the Rapid Metro services, which are considered the lifeline of the city, forcing an immediate halt for safety reasons. However, thanks to the swift actions of the electricity department and metro administration, services were restored between 8:15 and 8:25 PM using emergency backup.
Repairs Conducted at War Footing
Upon receiving news of the incident, a large team of technical staff from the electricity department was deployed for emergency repairs. After a night-long special repair operation, the damaged circuit was successfully restored.
Statement from Executive Engineer Anil Malik
"The incident occurred around 7:50 PM due to thermal heating and oil leakage. The explosion caused a disruption in the supply to sub-stations extending to sectors 52 and 56. Our team worked diligently throughout the night to restore the circuit completely. The entire system is now operational, and the situation is fully under control," stated Malik. According to DHBVN, power supply has been normalized in all affected residential and commercial sectors since Saturday morning, and a safety audit of power stations is being conducted to prevent future technical failures.
