Kovilpatti, July 20: A significant political uproar has emerged in Tamil Nadu following the arrest of DMK MLA Markandeyan during the early hours of Monday. He was taken into custody for allegedly making threatening statements directed at Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay during a public gathering in Kovilpatti.

The MLA's arrest followed the circulation of videos showcasing his speech on social media, which led to widespread backlash and calls for accountability.

The DMK's public meeting took place on Sunday night at the Krishnan Kovil Grounds, presided over by MLA I. Karunanidhi and attended by various party officials, including union secretaries Beekilipatti Murugesan, Radhakrishnan, Jayakannan, Subramanian, Karuppasamy, and Chinnapandian.

During his address, Markandeyan fiercely criticized Chief Minister Vijay regarding recent political events and the operations of the State Assembly.

In his speech, he purportedly warned the Chief Minister that if the Assembly convened, 'your bones will not remain intact,' and further asserted that DMK members would 'break your bones and send you back.'

These comments were interpreted as a direct threat to the Chief Minister. The videos of his remarks quickly gained traction on social media, prompting strong denunciation from various political factions and the public.

Critics condemned the MLA for employing violent and provocative language against a constitutional authority, with numerous leaders calling for immediate legal repercussions.

Responding to the complaints, law enforcement apprehended Markandeyan at his home in Vilathikulam early Monday morning.

He was taken into custody and escorted for questioning as part of the ongoing investigation.

The arrest incited protests from the MLA's supporters, who gathered outside his residence, chanting slogans against the police actions and attempting to obstruct the police vehicle transporting him.

Authorities dispersed the demonstrators and cleared the area before proceeding with the transport of the legislator.

According to police sources, Markandeyan was taken to the Superintendent of Police's office for further interrogation.

He is anticipated to be presented before a court following the conclusion of the preliminary investigation.

The arrest of the sitting DMK legislator has attracted considerable political scrutiny in Tamil Nadu, exacerbating the ongoing tensions between the ruling party and the opposition. The investigation remains active.
