Kolkata, June 4: Authorities have filed a First Information Report (FIR) against Mamata Banerjee, the former Chief Minister of West Bengal, for allegedly making inflammatory comments regarding the Home Ministry, as reported by police on Thursday.

The FIR was lodged at the Siliguri Cyber Crime Police Station following a complaint from a lawyer.

The allegations stem from Banerjee's statements made during a protest on Rani Rashmoni Road in Kolkata on June 2, where she referenced the murder of a Bangladeshi national, Osman Hadi, and suggested involvement from the Union Home Ministry and its Minister, Amit Shah.

Advocate Rinki Sen Chatterjee, who filed the complaint, claimed that Hadi was murdered in Bangladesh last December. She stated that the assailants crossed into West Bengal from Meghalaya in January, where they were apprehended by the state's Special Task Force (STF).

During her speech at the protest, Banerjee indicated that she was aware of the individuals involved in the murder, despite it occurring in another country, and directed accusations towards the Home Ministry.

Sen criticized Banerjee for her comments, arguing that as a former Chief Minister, she should have addressed the issue directly with the Home Ministry. "Now she is alleging that a murder in Bangladesh was orchestrated by the Home Ministry. Such statements are inciting tensions between India and Bangladesh and damaging the nation's reputation internationally. Her remarks jeopardize the safety of Hindus in Bangladesh," Sen stated.

She further noted that Banerjee had a duty to maintain national confidentiality while in office, but has instead stirred up fundamentalist sentiments since leaving her position.

At the protest, Banerjee remarked, “The STF arrested an accused from Bangladesh, which led to significant protests there. I am not discussing other nations, but it is clear that such individuals enter Bengal via Meghalaya. Once they arrive, the STF apprehends them. The Home Minister himself has acknowledged this.... I refrained from saying this for a long time, but today I am voicing it.”
