AIMIM Leader Criticizes Compulsory Recitation of 'Vande Mataram'

Opposition to Mandatory 'Vande Mataram' Recitation

New Delhi, July 28: Waris Pathan, spokesperson for AIMIM, expressed his disapproval of any initiative to mandate the recitation of 'Vande Mataram'. He emphasized that while Muslims hold respect for the national song, certain lines within it conflict with Islamic beliefs, making it inappropriate for followers of Islam to recite.

Pathan's comments followed the introduction of the Prevention of Insults to National Honour (Amendment) Bill, 2026, in the Rajya Sabha on July 24. This proposed law aims to provide 'Vande Mataram' with the same legal protections as the national anthem.

He reiterated that while AIMIM honors 'Vande Mataram', there are specific lyrics that Muslims cannot recite. "We respect Vande Mataram, but some lines are considered shirk in Islam. We worship only Allah, and this is our constitutional right under Article 25, which the Supreme Court has recognized," Pathan stated.

Pathan questioned the potential consequences for those who refuse to recite the national song, arguing that true respect for the nation should not necessitate compulsory recitation. He accused the BJP and RSS of using intimidation tactics regarding this issue.

"I respect my nation, but if I choose not to recite it, what will happen? Will I be punished? The BJP and RSS seem to thrive on threats," he remarked.

He differentiated between the national anthem and 'Vande Mataram', asserting that while his party fully respects and recites the national anthem, they oppose any coercion to recite the national song. "We sing the National Anthem 'Jana Gana Mana' with pride. The Supreme Court has ruled that the national anthem is mandatory, but the national song should not be forced upon us, as it would violate democratic principles," he added.

Pathan also highlighted the unfair labeling of Muslims as unpatriotic for their refusal to recite parts of the national song that contradict their faith. He reminded that the contributions of Muslims during India's struggle for independence should not be overlooked.

"When a Muslim's faith prevents them from reciting certain lines, they are accused of lacking patriotism. This is unjust. Many Muslims sacrificed their lives for this country's freedom. How many BJP leaders can recite 'Vande Mataram' without relying on a teleprompter?" he questioned.
