Political Violence Claims Another Life in West Bengal Amid Tensions
Political Turmoil in West Bengal
In the midst of a political shift in West Bengal, violence has escalated, resulting in another tragic death. Chandanath Rath, the personal assistant to the outgoing Leader of the Opposition, Suvendu Adhikari, was murdered just a day ago. His mother, Hasirani Rath, has now spoken out, attributing the blame for her son's death to the Trinamool Congress (TMC). Displaying a mother's compassion, she has called for life imprisonment for the perpetrators instead of the death penalty.
Hasirani expressed her desire for the offenders to face justice but emphasized that she does not wish for them to be executed. Speaking to reporters, she stated that her son was targeted because Adhikari defeated Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the Bhawanipur constituency during the recently concluded elections. She also mentioned that BJP workers have been urged to maintain law and order in the state.
Demands for Justice
According to reports, Hasirani said, "I want the guilty to be punished. As a mother, I do not want them to be hanged; I want them to receive life imprisonment. They did this because the BJP came to power." She further criticized members of the ruling party for making inflammatory remarks, suggesting that after the 4th, even the 'father' in Delhi would not be able to save them, implying that the violence was a direct consequence of such rhetoric.
Community Reactions
Deb Kumar Jana, a neighbor of Rath, noted that the victim had no known enemies. He recounted, "We were together in Chandipur, had dinner, and then left for Kolkata... He was a very good person with no conflicts with anyone."
Ongoing Tensions in Bengal
The murder has heightened tensions in West Bengal, where the BJP has recently achieved a significant victory over the TMC. The incident occurred on Wednesday night when the 41-year-old Rath was returning home from Kolkata to Madhyamgram.
Authorities suspect that advanced weapons, including a Glock 47X pistol, were used in the attack. The police are currently reviewing CCTV footage and believe that four motorcycles were involved in the planned assault. A suspicious vehicle that allegedly blocked Rath's car has been seized, although its license plate was found to be fake, according to West Bengal's Director General of Police, Siddhi Nath Gupta. "We have recovered empty cartridges and live rounds from the scene. At this stage, the motive behind the attack remains unclear," he added.
