VCK's Position on Supporting TVK
The Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), which secured two seats in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections on April 23, has yet to clarify its political stance regarding support for the Tamilaga Vetrikazhagam (TVK). This uncertainty comes as the formation of a new government in the state hangs in the balance. VCK contested the elections under the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance and was allocated eight seats, winning in the Kattumannarkoil and Tindivanam constituencies. These victories are crucial for government formation, as actor-politician C. Joseph Vijay has reached out to several parties, including CPI, CPI(M), and VCK, seeking their backing.
TVK's Quest for Majority
TVK, which won 108 seats, is striving to secure a total of 118 seats in the 234-member assembly by seeking support from various smaller parties. The CPI and CPI(M), each holding two seats, along with the Congress, which has five seats, have pledged their support to TVK. To achieve a majority, TVK requires one more seat. Vijay and senior party officials have been in discussions with Governor Rajendra Arlekar for three consecutive days regarding government formation. However, an official statement from Lok Bhavan clarified that TVK has not yet garnered the necessary majority support to form a government in Tamil Nadu.
VCK's Decision Pending
VCK leader Thol Thirumavalavan indicated that a decision regarding support for TVK would be announced following a meeting of their party's executive committee, based on the resolutions made by the leftist parties. Meanwhile, CPI Tamil Nadu Secretary M. Veerapandian confirmed that CPI would support TVK, adding that VCK is also likely to align with the leftist parties' decisions as indicated by Thirumavalavan.
VCK Responds to Speculations
In the absence of an official response from VCK, Tindivanam MLA Vanni Arasu shared a message stating, “You may try to marginalize or isolate us, but we will determine our position.” On Saturday, VCK's Viluppuram MP D. Ravikumar took to social media to refute circulating claims about VCK demanding various positions and expectations from TVK, labeling them as completely false. He urged the media not to believe such reports and to refrain from participating in efforts to defame VCK. Thirumavalavan had mentioned that their party would clarify its stance by inviting the press at 11 AM on Saturday. However, a large gathering of journalists, TVK members, and police at the VCK office led to the announcement that they would clarify their position later in the day.
