The motorcycle overtook Rath's vehicle, and assailants in the four-wheeler opened fire on the BJP leader's personal assistant, resulting in his death. Siddharth Nath Gupta, the Director General of Police (DGP) of West Bengal, informed a news agency that they have initiated an investigation into the case. They have seized the four-wheeler believed to be involved in the crime, although reports suggest that the vehicle's license plate may have been tampered with. Chandranath Rath's Background

Originally from Chandipur in East Medinipur district, Rath was a significant figure in the political landscape that shaped Adhikari's rise. Despite his long association with Adhikari, he remained largely out of the public eye. Rath completed his education at the Ramakrishna Mission in Rahara and served in the Indian Air Force (IAF) for nearly two decades. Family members have indicated that before entering politics, Rath contemplated a spiritual life, deeply influenced by the ideologies of the Ramakrishna Mission.

Political Connections

Like Adhikari, Rath was initially affiliated with Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress (TMC). His mother, Hasi Rath, served as a member of the local panchayat in East Medinipur during TMC's rule. After Adhikari left TMC, Rath's family joined the BJP in 2020. Sources indicate that Rath and Adhikari's relationship dates back over two decades, coinciding with TMC's expansion in East Medinipur. However, Rath officially joined Adhikari's team only in 2019 when Adhikari was a minister in the West Bengal government.

Rath's Role in Adhikari's Political Journey

Initially overseeing Adhikari's ministerial responsibilities, Rath later became his right-hand man, coordinating the BJP leader's political campaigns. Maintaining contact with party workers was crucial for Adhikari, who reportedly had complete trust in Rath. During Adhikari's electoral battle against Banerjee in Bhawanipur, Rath played a pivotal role in organizing the entire campaign. Notably, in the recent West Bengal elections, Adhikari defeated Banerjee by over 15,000 votes in the Bhawanipur constituency.

BJP's Response to the Murder

The murder of Rath has sparked sharp reactions, with the BJP holding TMC accountable for the incident. While Adhikari refrained from naming any organization, he stated that this event is a consequence of TMC's 15 years of 'Maha Jungle Raj.' Conversely, Banerjee's party has outright rejected these allegations and has called for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the matter.
