Political Turmoil in West Bengal: Key Leaders Resign Amid TMC Crisis

The political landscape in West Bengal is facing significant upheaval as key leaders from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) resign, highlighting deep internal divisions. Krishna Chakraborty has stepped down from his role as mayor, following Firhad Hakim's resignation. The crisis is further intensified by Ritabrata Banerjee's rebellion, which has garnered support from a substantial number of legislators. With 17 Muslim lawmakers joining the rebel faction, the TMC's stability is in jeopardy. This article delves into the reasons behind these resignations and the implications for Mamata Banerjee's leadership.

Mamata Banerjee Faces Setback as Key Ally Resigns

West Bengal's former Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, has encountered another political setback with the resignation of Krishna Chakraborty from the mayoral position of Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation. This resignation comes at a time when the Trinamool Congress (TMC) is grappling with a significant internal crisis, marked by a major rebellion and unprecedented divisions within the party. The TMC has lost substantial support from its legislators, with 60 out of 80 lawmakers backing a rebel faction led by Ritabrata Banerjee, which has already received recognition from the Assembly Speaker.

Reasons Behind Krishna Chakraborty's Resignation

Reports indicate that Krishna Chakraborty cited personal reasons for stepping down from the mayoral role. Earlier on Wednesday, another senior TMC leader and close associate of Banerjee, Firhad Hakim, also resigned from the mayoral position in Kolkata, a role he had held since 2018.

Ritabrata Banerjee's Rebellion

TMC leader Ritabrata Banerjee has emerged as a central figure in this political crisis. Once considered one of Mamata Banerjee's most trusted allies, Ritabrata has reportedly distanced himself from the party. The controversy began following allegations of forged signatures related to the election of the opposition leader. After raising concerns about this issue, both Ritabrata Banerjee and Sandipan Saha were expelled from the party. Within just two days, Ritabrata managed to dismantle the entire party structure, garnering support from over two-thirds of the Assembly, totaling 58 legislators, delivering what could be the most significant blow to Mamata Banerjee's political career.

17 Muslim Legislators Switch Allegiance

It is widely believed that Abhishek Banerjee is a key factor behind the fragmentation of the TMC. TMC legislator Arunava Sen has publicly expressed his discontent with Abhishek's 'dictatorial' leadership style. While Mamata Banerjee remains the party leader, many legislators are dissatisfied with Abhishek. The inclusion of 17 current Muslim legislators in the rebel faction led by Ritabrata has dealt a significant blow to the party. Highlighting their importance in the new alliance, Ritabrata has appointed one of the defecting legislators, Akharuzzaman, as the chief whip of the rebel group.
