As investigations unfold, the political implications of this tragedy continue to resonate throughout the state.

Murder of BJP Leader's Aide Sparks Political Tensions

The assassination of Chandranath Rath, a personal assistant to senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, has stirred significant unrest in West Bengal's political landscape, just days after the assembly elections. This incident occurred in the Madhyamgram area of North 24 Parganas, escalating tensions between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Trinamool Congress (TMC).

Reports indicate that Rath was returning home around 10:30 PM on Wednesday when he was pursued by motorcycle-riding assailants near the Dolatala area of Madhyamgram. Eyewitnesses stated that a car first blocked Rath's vehicle near the Dohariya turn, after which a motorcyclist approached and opened fire. The attackers fled the scene immediately after the assault.

Chandranath Rath was rushed to a private hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival. Medical professionals revealed that he sustained two gunshot wounds to the chest, which penetrated his heart, along with another bullet in his abdomen. The severity of his injuries left no chance for survival. Following the news of his death, hundreds of BJP supporters gathered outside the hospital, vocally protesting against the ruling TMC and demanding the immediate arrest of the perpetrators. In response to the situation, a heavy police presence was deployed around the hospital and on Jessore Road to prevent any further disturbances.

Political Reactions and Allegations

Late into the night, Suvendu Adhikari arrived at the hospital. BJP state president Samik Bhattacharya condemned the incident as a premeditated and targeted attack, suggesting that the assailants aimed to send a political message through this murder. He emphasized that the criminalization of politics in West Bengal has reached alarming levels, and this incident serves as a testament to that reality. He urged the public to take to the streets and voice their opposition to such violence.

BJP leader and newly elected MLA Kaustav Bagchi also labeled the incident as a targeted attack, noting that the assailants had pursued Rath's vehicle for an extended period before opening fire. Another newly elected BJP MLA, Tarun Jyoti Tiwari, accused the TMC of severely undermining public order.

Conversely, the TMC has strongly condemned the murder of Chandranath Rath. The party issued a statement claiming that three of its workers have also been killed in the violence following the elections over the past three days. They alleged that these incidents were perpetrated by BJP-backed miscreants and called for a CBI investigation under judicial supervision to swiftly identify and punish the culprits.

Police Investigation and Background of the Victim

Meanwhile, the state's Director General of Police, Siddh Nath Gupta, visited the hospital to gather information about the case. He confirmed that cartridges used in the crime had been recovered from the scene, and the vehicle involved in the attack has also been seized. Initial investigations suggest that the vehicle's registration number appears to be from the Siliguri regional transport office, although police suspect that the license plate may have been tampered with.

Barasat district police superintendent Pushpa stated that surveillance footage from nearby areas is being reviewed to identify the attackers. The investigation team is also exploring whether Rath was specifically targeted due to his close association with Suvendu Adhikari or if there is a broader political conspiracy at play. Forensic teams have collected samples from the vehicle and are attempting to reconstruct the sequence of events.

It is noteworthy that Chandranath Rath was a former Air Force personnel who later became Suvendu Adhikari's assistant. He joined Adhikari's official team around 2019 when Adhikari was a minister in the Mamata Banerjee government. Even after Adhikari's transition to the BJP, Rath remained a key figure, coordinating organizational tasks, managing elections, and maintaining contact with party workers. He was regarded as one of Adhikari's most trusted aides and had worked diligently in the Bhawanipur constituency during the recent elections.

Accusations Against TMC Leadership

In the meantime, Arjun Singh, the victorious BJP candidate from the Noapara assembly constituency, accused Abhishek Banerjee of orchestrating the murder, suggesting that it was intended to convey a message of intimidation despite the TMC not being in power. He claimed that this was a premeditated murder carried out by a trained shooter and insisted that Banerjee would face consequences once the investigation unfolds. Suvendu Adhikari has vowed to ensure justice in this matter.
