Opposition Leaders Express Outrage

The attack on Abhishek Banerjee, the national general secretary of the Trinamool Congress and MP, has sparked significant anger among opposition leaders in West Bengal. In response, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has made a notable claim, stating that Congress MP Rahul Gandhi personally reached out to her, offering any assistance necessary for Banerjee's treatment.

Potential Treatment in Hyderabad

During a late-night press conference on Saturday, Mamata Banerjee shared details of her conversation with Rahul Gandhi. She mentioned, "Rahul Gandhi called me and said that if there is anything needed, I can let him know. He even offered to take Abhishek Banerjee for treatment in Hyderabad or any other location."

Abhishek's Visit to Violence-Affected Families

The incident occurred when Abhishek Banerjee visited families affected by post-election violence in the Sonarpur area of South 24 Parganas. During his visit, he faced intense protests from local residents and demonstrators, who vocally opposed him and allegedly attacked him.

Shirt Torn Amidst Security Chaos

Videos from Sonarpur clearly show angry protesters throwing stones, eggs, and shoes at the TMC leader. Amidst the chaos and scuffle, Abhishek Banerjee's shirt was torn. Eventually, security personnel managed to escort him to safety and out of the area.

Banerjee Calls Attack a Pre-Planned Conspiracy

In a statement regarding the attack, Abhishek Banerjee labeled it a premeditated conspiracy. He raised concerns about the lack of police presence at the scene, stating, "Look at what they did to me. This was all planned. There was no police around. They wanted to harm me."

Allegations of Pressure on Hospitals

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee made further serious allegations, claiming that hospitals and doctors are being pressured to deny treatment to Abhishek Banerjee. She stated, "Those in power are threatening all hospitals and senior officials not to admit Abhishek Banerjee. When I spoke with the hospital administrator, he informed me that they were receiving threatening calls from the police. The doctors are distressed but are under pressure."

Rahul Gandhi Condemns Attack as Assault on Democracy

On the other hand, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi condemned the attack on social media platform 'X'. He wrote, "The attack on MP Abhishek Banerjee in Sonarpur is utterly condemnable. An attack on an MP is not just an attack on an individual; it is an assault on those who elected him and on the democracy that is our shared heritage. This is the ugly face of the BJP's vendetta politics. Political differences should never justify violence." He called for immediate action against the perpetrators by both the central and West Bengal governments.

BJP Denies Involvement

The political atmosphere has become highly charged following this incident. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has raised questions about security arrangements, while Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav has described it as a 'major conspiracy', accusing the BJP of promoting violent politics. However, the BJP has categorically denied these allegations. West Bengal BJP President Sukanta Majumdar stated that the party had no role in the incident, suggesting it could be local anger against the TMC. He also called for peace.
