Political Turmoil in Dispur: Atul Bora Reacts to BJP's Candidate Selection

The recent decision by the BJP to nominate Pradyut Bordoloi for the Dispur constituency has led to significant backlash from incumbent MLA Atul Bora. Bora, who has represented Dispur since 1985, feels betrayed by the party's candidate selection process. He has expressed his disillusionment with the current state of the BJP and is considering running as an independent candidate or supporting another candidate. Bora's strong statements highlight the internal conflicts within the party as he prepares to make a final decision by March 22.

Atul Bora's Discontent with BJP's Decision

Guwahati, March 19: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has sparked controversy by selecting Pradyut Bordoloi, a new member and current MP from Nagaon, to contest from the Dispur constituency. This decision has led to significant backlash from the sitting MLA, Atul Bora.

Bora, who has served as an MLA for Dispur six times, voiced his strong discontent, claiming he feels betrayed and questioning the selection process of candidates within the party.

“Since 1985, I have represented Dispur and have triumphed over three Chief Ministers throughout my political career. I naturally anticipated that my history would be taken into account,” Bora remarked, emphasizing his long-standing connection to the constituency.

Despite his dedication, Bora expressed feelings of disillusionment regarding the current dynamics within the party.

“There is no conducive environment for work in the BJP today. Party members are uncertain about their direction. Although the party claims to be the largest, it is now bringing in candidates from outside and allocating tickets,” he stated.

Bora did not hold back in his criticism of Bordoloi, accusing him of seeking political advantage.

“Pradyut Bordoloi previously served as an MLA from Margherita, then transitioned to Nagaon as an MP. Now, he aims to run from Dispur. This is a betrayal to the constituents of Margherita and Nagaon, and I worry that Dispur may face the same fate,” he asserted.

Despite his grievances, Bora affirmed his commitment to the democratic process. “There’s no doubt that Bordoloi will now serve the people of Dispur, but the manner in which this decision was made is unacceptable,” he remarked.

As for his future plans, Bora mentioned he is contemplating several options.

“I am weighing three possibilities: running as an independent candidate, supporting Mira Borthakur, or holding off on a decision. I will finalize my choice by March 22,” he explained.

He also emphasized his autonomy in decision-making. “I will heed the voices of the people of Dispur, not the Chief Minister,” he stated.

Bora further noted that even party members were caught off guard by the decision to not grant him a ticket. “Everyone, including party workers and the general public, believed I would be renominated. This news has come as a shock, and I feel let down,” he concluded.
