Political Turmoil in Bihar: Allegations of Dual Voter IDs Rock Lok Janshakti Party Leaders
Election Commission Takes Action
Patna: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has issued notices to Veena Devi, a Member of Parliament from the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), and her spouse, Dinesh Singh, a Member of the Legislative Council from JD(U), regarding allegations of possessing dual voter identity cards.
They are required to respond by 5 P.M. on August 16.
This controversy has ignited significant political discourse in Bihar, following claims by RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav that the couple is listed in the voter rolls of two different Assembly constituencies: Bada Daud village in Sahebganj and Muzaffarpur-94.
Issuing two separate EPIC cards to the same individual breaches the ECI's regulations, which stipulate that a voter's name should only appear in one constituency.
The ECI has stated that being registered in two locations is a punishable offense.
Tejashwi Yadav took to social media to express his concerns, accusing the ECI of providing cover for NDA leaders.
"When members of the Opposition face allegations, swift action is taken, yet leaders from the ruling party seem to be shielded," he remarked.
In light of the growing controversy surrounding the alleged dual voter IDs, Veena Devi has defended her position, claiming that her name's presence in two voter lists resulted from bureaucratic delays rather than any deliberate misconduct.
"After my marriage, my name was added to the voter list for the urban area of Muzaffarpur. Subsequently, while running for Zilla Parishad elections, my name was also included in the village list. Since then, I have consistently voted from the village using the EPIC number from that constituency since 2001," Veena Devi explained.
She mentioned that she had previously requested the Booth Level Officer (BLO) to remove her name from the urban list, but no action was taken, and she intends to pursue this matter again.
When questioned about Tejashwi Yadav's accusations, Veena Devi dismissed them as politically motivated attacks.
"Opposition leaders are tasked with making allegations against those in power," she stated.
The issue of dual voter registration has emerged as a significant political issue in Bihar.
It was initially brought to light concerning Tejashwi Yadav, and later, similar allegations surfaced against Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha and Muzaffarpur Mayor Nirmala Devi.
The Election Commission has emphasized that strict measures will be enforced against anyone found in violation of voter registration regulations.
