Political Turmoil in AIADMK Following 2026 Tamil Nadu Election Results
AIADMK Faces Leadership Crisis After Election Defeat
The results of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections have ignited a significant political upheaval within the AIADMK party. Following a disappointing performance, calls for a leadership change have intensified. Reports indicate that a faction led by senior leader C.V. Shanmugam has openly challenged party chief Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS), demanding his immediate resignation.
Despite the mounting pressure from various party segments, EPS appears unwilling to step down. According to top sources within AIADMK, legislators aligned with Shanmugam and several former ministers have made it clear that they can no longer accept EPS's leadership after four consecutive electoral defeats. In the elections held on April 23, AIADMK managed to secure only 47 out of 293 seats.
Insiders have revealed that the repeated electoral losses have severely impacted morale within AIADMK, leading to growing discontent regarding the leadership's political strategies. The widening rift between EPS's faction and the leaders associated with Shanmugam has raised concerns about a potential split within the party.
Potential Alliances and Political Maneuvering
Previously, there were discussions about Shanmugam's faction potentially forming an alliance with actor-politician Vijay's party, the Tamilga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), which was then working to gather the necessary numbers to form a government.
TVK had a strong showing in the assembly elections, winning 108 seats but falling short of the majority by 10 seats. After extensive negotiations with CPI, CPI (M), Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), TVK successfully crossed the majority threshold. Subsequently, Vijay took the oath of office as Chief Minister in a grand ceremony.
While TVK was striving for a majority, over 30 legislators, including Shanmugam, were reportedly holed up in a resort in Puducherry last week, amidst talks of an alliance with Vijay's party. In an effort to maintain unity among his legislators, EPS also visited the resort. There were rumors that the DMK had initiated secret discussions with AIADMK, which reportedly angered Shanmugam and prompted him to consider an alliance with the TVK-led government.
