Political Turmoil for AAP as Key Leaders Defect to BJP
The Aam Aadmi Party is currently grappling with a significant political crisis as seven of its Rajya Sabha MPs have defected to the BJP. This move has been termed a betrayal of Punjab by AAP, which is now strategizing on how to address the fallout ahead of crucial assembly elections. The party's representation in the Rajya Sabha will drastically reduce, raising questions about its future and expansion plans. Key leaders who previously bolstered AAP's presence in Punjab have left, potentially leaving a void that could impact the party's strength in upcoming elections. Current Crisis for Aam Aadmi Party
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is currently facing a significant political upheaval. Upon returning from a trip to Gujarat, senior party leader Manish Sisodia went directly to the residence of Delhi Chief Minister and party chief Arvind Kejriwal. The two leaders held a crucial half-hour meeting late at night, primarily focused on the departure of seven prominent Rajya Sabha MPs from the party and strategizing solutions ahead of the upcoming Punjab elections. They discussed the party's future strategies and how to address the crisis before the important assembly elections in Punjab next year.
According to sources within AAP, following his late-night return to Delhi, Sisodia went straight from the airport to Kejriwal's home. The meeting lasted over half an hour, during which they deliberated on the potential impact of the recent party split and the necessary future strategies.
Seven Rajya Sabha MPs from AAP—Raghav Chadha, Ashok Mittal, Sandeep Pathak, Harbhajan Singh, Rajendra Gupta, Vikram Sahni, and Swati Maliwal—have defected to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). AAP has labeled this move as a "betrayal of Punjab" and accused the BJP of using central agencies to create divisions within the party.
The party is now contemplating actions against these seven leaders. This includes sending a letter through ND Gupta to the Rajya Sabha Chairman CP Radhakrishnan, requesting action against Chadha, Mittal, and Pathak under the anti-defection law. Gupta serves as AAP's Chief Whip in the upper house.
AAP sources indicated that Gupta's letter will demand action under the anti-defection law, as these three leaders were publicly seen joining the BJP. The other four leaders have not been observed doing so publicly, hence the Chief Whip will only file a complaint against the three MPs seen at the BJP office.
This development will strengthen the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by the BJP in the upper house, as AAP's representation in the Rajya Sabha will drop from ten to just three seats. This is a critical moment for AAP, which is currently preparing for assembly elections in Punjab, Goa, and Gujarat next year, while also aiming to expand its support base beyond Delhi. Key leaders, especially Chadha and Pathak, played vital roles in strengthening AAP's presence in Punjab; however, their departure could create a significant void in the party. The current situation may ultimately determine whether AAP can maintain its expansion goals or if it will be confined to its existing strongholds.
