Political Turmoil as Nagaon MP Joins BJP Amidst Controversy
Political Reactions to Bordoloi's Shift
New Delhi, Mar 18: The recent decision of Nagaon MP Pradyut Bordoloi to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has sparked a wave of political responses, with Congress leaders expressing their dismay over the development.
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, a prominent Congress figure, described Bordoloi's departure as regrettable, hinting that disagreements regarding ticket distribution might have influenced his choice. “I believe he was dissatisfied with the ticket allocation, and I wish we could have discussed it. This is unfortunate,” Vadra stated to reporters at the Parliament House.
Congress MP Imran Masood criticized Bordoloi's move, suggesting it represented a betrayal of ideological principles. He remarked, “It is unfortunate that he won from a constituency with a 65% Muslim demographic. He secured victory against the BJP. Compromising on ideology is not acceptable. We will attempt to convince him otherwise.”
In response, BJP representatives seized the opportunity to attack the Congress party, asserting that Bordoloi's resignation signifies a growing endorsement for the ruling party. BJP MP Nishikant Dubey remarked, “There is nothing left in the Congress. Gaurav Gogoi might be next.”
BJP MP Dinesh Sharma emphasized the increasing public trust in the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, claiming that the Congress is diminishing into a regional entity as its members migrate to the BJP.
Supporting this sentiment, BJP MP Damodar Agarwal stated, “No one wishes to stay on a sinking ship. Congress leaders are seeking better opportunities due to the party's shortcomings.”
In a significant blow to the Congress, Bordoloi resigned from the party on Tuesday and officially joined the BJP the following day, just weeks before the state Assembly elections.
Previously, Bordoloi had communicated his dissatisfaction to AICC’s Jitendra Singh regarding the Congress's decision to nominate MLA Dr. Asif Nazar for the constituency, alleging that Nazar was involved in a “life-threatening” attack against him in April 2025.
