Political Turmoil: AAP MPs Defect to BJP Amid Allegations of Corruption
Defections Shake AAP's Foundation
New Delhi/Chandigarh: In response to the recent defections of several Rajya Sabha members, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has declared its intention to pursue the disqualification of these members from the Upper House. The defectors have countered these claims, citing corruption and a decline in the party's ideological stance as their reasons for leaving.
The seven MPs who departed emphasized that their decision was not driven by fear, but rather by a profound sense of "disappointment, disengagement, and disgust" with the current leadership.
Sources within AAP revealed that Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has requested a meeting with President Droupadi Murmu, accompanied by party MLAs, to discuss the potential "recall" of the Rajya Sabha members who resigned on Friday.
Notably, six of the seven MPs who left the party hail from Punjab.
During a press conference in Delhi, senior AAP leader Sanjay Singh announced that the party would formally request the Rajya Sabha Chairman to disqualify the MPs who have switched allegiance.
"The anti-defection law clearly states that any faction or split is not recognized in the Rajya Sabha or Lok Sabha, regardless of whether it involves a two-thirds majority," Singh asserted.
He labeled the seven MPs who joined the BJP as "unconstitutional" and "illegal."
Raghav Chadha, who spearheaded the rebellion, reiterated that the departing members were motivated by a growing disillusionment with the party's leadership.
Chadha expressed that many dedicated members who once supported the party are now leaving, feeling that the AAP is straying from its foundational values.
He claimed that the MPs are departing together because they perceive the party to be in "corrupt and compromised hands."
Mann took to social media to mock the defectors, using a culinary metaphor to suggest that while individual ingredients are valuable, they cannot create a dish alone.
The AAP faced a significant setback when Chadha, Ashok Mittal, Sandeep Pathak, Harbhajan Singh, Rajendra Gupta, Vikram Sahni, and Swati Maliwal announced their departure and merged their parliamentary faction with the BJP, citing a departure from the party's core principles.
Although Chadha and Maliwal had previously fallen out of favor within AAP, the defection of the other five MPs surprised many observers.
Mann accused the BJP of attempting to undermine a corruption-free government in Punjab through intimidation and orchestrated defections.
Maliwal, who had a fallout with Kejriwal after an alleged assault by a close aide, stated that she left the party because it had strayed significantly from its original values.
She criticized the party for becoming synonymous with "lies, corruption, and hooliganism," asserting that the real betrayal lies in abandoning one's principles.
Maliwal predicted that more leaders would follow suit in leaving the party.
AAP Lok Sabha member Malvinder Singh Kang emphasized the need for improved communication and coordination between party leadership and its members in Punjab.
He also suggested that the party should have considered local workers and volunteers for Rajya Sabha nominations.
Meanwhile, social media erupted with humorous memes and jokes regarding the political upheaval, with users creatively referencing popular culture.
One viral meme depicted a classroom scene where a student boasts about securing a placement, humorously likening it to the MPs finally achieving their "dream package" in politics.
On another front, the BJP intensified its criticism of Kejriwal over the new government bungalow allocated to him at Lodhi Estate, dubbing it "Sheesh Mahal 2" and alleging misuse of public funds for its amenities.
The AAP has refuted these claims, labeling them as false.
At a press conference, Delhi Public Works Department Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma accused Kejriwal of developing a taste for luxury living.
Verma remarked that after being ousted from Sheesh Mahal by voters in Delhi, Kejriwal relocated to Punjab, where he acquired a bungalow, and has now created "Sheesh Mahal 2" at Lodhi Estate.
Senior AAP leader Atishi countered Verma's allegations, asserting that the photographs he presented were fabricated.
In a post on social media, she challenged the authenticity of the images and suggested that the public should evaluate the living conditions of various leaders.
