Allegations of Political Cover-Up in Kolkata Rape Case
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has released images of Manojit Mishra, the main suspect in the alleged gang rape of a law student in Kolkata, claiming he was seen with prominent leaders of the Trinamool Congress (TMC). In response, the TMC distanced itself from Mishra, asserting that the images shared by the BJP were from social events. Three individuals have been arrested in connection with the rape allegations against a student from South Kolkata Law College, including Mishra, who is the secretary of the TMC student council in the region.

Amit Malviya, head of the BJP's IT cell, condemned the incident as appalling, alleging that the main suspect was being shielded and that it represented a high-level cover-up. He shared photographs of Mishra alongside Abhishek Banerjee, state minister Chandrima Bhattacharya, and councillor Kajari Banerjee, claiming that the TMC is a party that protects rapists. Malviya emphasized that the BJP would not allow political power to suppress this crime and vowed to stand firmly with the victim until justice is served.

In a counter-response, TMC leader Trinankur Bhattacharya acknowledged that the party did not foresee Mishra's involvement in such a heinous crime. However, he clarified that the party has no ties to the accused. During a press conference, Bhattacharya stated that it was a mistake on their part not to anticipate that a student leader they had welcomed into their ranks could commit such an act. He noted that Mishra did not hold any significant position within the student wing.
