Political Rivalry Intensifies in Himachal Pradesh

A prolonged period of uncertainty regarding the expansion of the Himachal Pradesh Cabinet has escalated into a public dispute between BJP MLA Sudhir Sharma and Congress MLA Sunder Singh Thakur on social media.

This recent exchange has introduced a new dynamic to the ongoing discussions among Congress leaders about filling the vacant Cabinet position. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, along with several Cabinet members, has been frequently traveling to Delhi to seek a consensus on this anticipated expansion.

During the latest discussions, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge reportedly engaged with Himachal ministers individually. Although no official decision has been announced yet, the ongoing talks have highlighted the competing interests of various regions and aspirants.

Kullu MLA Sunder Singh Thakur has been viewed as a leading candidate for the vacant position for several months. His name has been a focal point in political conversations, and Chief Minister Sukhu has made comments that many interpreted as hints towards Thakur's potential inclusion in the Cabinet.

However, the situation has become more complex as party leaders are also eager to ensure adequate representation from Kangra, the largest political district in the state, which has 15 Assembly constituencies. Consequently, Palampur MLA Ashish Butail has emerged as a formidable contender.

This regional consideration adds another layer to the decision-making process. Kullu has four Assembly constituencies, while Kangra has 15, making it crucial for the Congress leadership to consider representation from Kangra ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.

In this context, a Facebook post by Dharamshala BJP MLA Sudhir Sharma has sparked new speculation. He mentioned a 'Sunderkand' being performed in Delhi, a comment interpreted by many as a direct reference to the ongoing meetings in Delhi and the speculation surrounding Thakur's potential promotion.

Thakur responded with a pointed remark, stating that a Sunderkand is meant for the peace and well-being of a household, but accused Sharma of conducting 'kands' in others' homes.

This exchange has become a notable example of the political rivalry between the two legislators. Sharma, a former Congress member who switched to the BJP, has been a vocal opponent of the Sukhu administration, while Thakur is seen as an ally of the Chief Minister. Their recent social media clash has gained significance beyond a typical political disagreement, especially as Congress navigates competing claims for the Cabinet position.

This situation underscores the increasing pressure on the Sukhu government to address the Cabinet vacancy, which has been a topic of political discourse for months, with various names being suggested and expectations raised without any conclusive announcement.
