Political Tensions Rise in South 24 Parganas Ahead of West Bengal Elections
Political Climate Heats Up in Falta
As the second phase of the West Bengal assembly elections approaches, the political atmosphere in Falta, South 24 Parganas, has intensified. Following a stern warning from Ajay Pal Sharma, a prominent IPS officer from the Uttar Pradesh cadre and police observer for the Election Commission, significant administrative actions have been taken. On Tuesday, the Election Commission transferred a key election officer in South 24 Parganas amid escalating political controversy sparked by Sharma's remarks, which led to protests from the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC).
Transfer of Election Officer Amid Controversy
The controversy ignited when Ajay Pal Sharma, appointed as an observer by the Election Commission, cautioned potential troublemakers that they would be dealt with "appropriately" if they attempted to disrupt the voting process. His comments triggered a political uproar, with the TMC accusing him of overstepping his authority and intimidating party workers. Consequently, the joint BDO of Falta, Sourav Hazra, has been transferred to the Purulia headquarters. An official announcement on Tuesday confirmed that Ramya Bhattacharya, an officer on special duty, has been appointed in his place.
Escalating Tensions Following Sharma's Warning
The situation escalated further when a viral video showed Sharma visiting the residence of TMC candidate Jahangir Khan late Monday night. In the video, Sharma warned that strict action would be taken against anyone attempting to intimidate voters. He stated, "Make sure they understand. If there are complaints of intimidation, we will handle it appropriately." Sharma, often referred to as 'Singham', faced sharp criticism from Khan, who retorted, "If he is 'Singham', then I am 'Pushpa'."
Protests Erupt in Falta
Following this exchange, TMC supporters gathered in Falta, protesting against Sharma's visit and accusing him of intimidating party workers before the elections. They claimed that his convoy, accompanied by central forces, attempted to intimidate them.
Allegations of Misconduct by Central Forces
The controversy deepened when a woman filed a complaint at the Falta police station, alleging misconduct by central forces. In her complaint, she stated that individuals claiming to be members of the CRPF entered her home without valid documentation late on April 27. She alleged that they attempted to detain her husband and physically assaulted her, accusing them of inappropriate touching and harassment. The complaint also claimed that her family was pressured to vote for the BJP, with threats of repercussions if they refused. She has demanded an FIR and a thorough investigation, including scrutiny of the police observer's role.
Rising Tensions Before Voting
Falta, part of the Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha constituency, has become a high-stakes electoral battleground as campaigning reaches its peak. The recent deployment of multiple observers by the Election Commission has heightened attention on the electoral process just days before voting.
