Ongoing Political Demands Amidst Mourning

Churachandpur/Imphal, Feb 26: Five days after the passing of BJP MLA Vungzagin Valte in a Gurugram hospital, his body remains at the morgue in Churachandpur district. Tribal organizations have indicated that the burial will be postponed due to renewed political demands.

An official confirmed that Valte's remains were moved to the morgue on Wednesday afternoon, with an autopsy planned.

A representative from a Zomi civil group stated that even after the post-mortem, the burial is unlikely to occur soon.

He emphasized, “Given the recent events, our demand for a separate administration is paramount before any further actions are taken. We will convene with civil bodies to determine the next steps.”

On Wednesday night, various tribal organizations held a candlelight vigil in Churachandpur, reiterating their call for a Union Territory with legislative powers for the hill regions following the MLA's death.

Protesters chanted slogans demanding justice and called for the investigation into the May 4, 2023 attack on Valte to be transferred to the CBI or NIA.

The remains of the 56-Thanlon legislator were airlifted to Mizoram on February 22 and later returned to his home in Churachandpur on February 24.

Manipur's Governor, Ajay Kumar Bhalla, paid his respects by laying a wreath and covering the body with a traditional shawl at the residence.

The Zomi Council, representing the Zomi tribe, has stated it will decide on the burial arrangements.

Family members of the deceased MLA are reportedly in discussions with civil society groups.

The delay in the final rites has introduced a new political layer to the situation, with tribal groups connecting the funeral to broader demands for separate governance and a thorough investigation into the 2023 attack that severely injured the senior legislator.
