Political Tensions Rise in Kaliabor Ahead of 2026 Assembly Elections
Political Dynamics in Kaliabor
Guwahati, Dec 18: As the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) prepares for the 2026 Assembly elections, tensions have emerged within the coalition, particularly between the BJP and the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) in the Kaliabor constituency.
In the previous two Assembly elections, the AGP was granted the Kaliabor seat. However, local BJP members are now advocating for the party to contest this seat in the upcoming elections.
To address this matter, BJP activists have been conducting private meetings in various locations, including Lailuri, Misa, and Anjukpani.
One BJP member expressed, “We believe the AGP has had its turn with the Kaliabor constituency. For the 2026 elections, we want the BJP to be given the opportunity to contest. We will communicate this to our party leaders and await their decision.”
Regarding the 2026 elections, the member emphasized that the BJP is fully prepared for the Assembly polls throughout Assam.
“With guidance from both central and state leadership, we are enhancing our organizational strength at the booth level. Regular meetings are being held to ensure we are ready,” the member stated.
This situation is not unprecedented; earlier this month, on December 13, the AGP indicated potential independent candidacy for the 2026 elections if it does not receive a seat in the Nalbari constituency.
This warning was issued during a district meeting at Nagen Sharma Bhawan in Nalbari, led by AGP Nalbari District Committee president Anand Rajbongshi.
During the meeting, Rajbongshi announced two significant resolutions: to prepare for an independent contest and to ensure that if an alliance with the BJP continues, the AGP must be allocated at least one seat in Nalbari.
