The ongoing verbal conflict between Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti has escalated to include references to Afzal Guru and Maqbool Bhat. Despite Mehbooba expressing regret over her comments regarding the use of force against Kashmiris at Jantar Mantar, the controversy shows no signs of abating.
During a media interaction in Srinagar, Mehbooba accused the National Conference of deliberately misrepresenting her statements. However, she added that it does not affect her. She remarked, "The National Conference is portraying my comments as if I signed the death warrants for Afzal Guru and Maqbool Bhat, or as if I suggested shooting Kashmiris."

In response to Mehbooba's remarks, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah sharply criticized her. He stated that no one in Jammu and Kashmir signed the death warrants for Afzal Guru and Maqbool Bhat, as these decisions were made at the judicial and central government levels. Abdullah emphasized that merely expressing "regret" is insufficient; Mehbooba should publicly apologize to the people of Kashmir for her statements.
It is important to note that Afzal Guru, convicted for the 2001 Parliament attack, was executed on February 9, 2013, in Tihar Jail, while Maqbool Bhat, the founder of the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF), was hanged on February 11, 1984.
The question arises as to why Afzal Guru and Maqbool Bhat are being mentioned in this political dispute. The two major regional parties in Jammu and Kashmir, the National Conference and the People's Democratic Party, are attempting to portray each other as opponents of Kashmiri interests.
The National Conference accuses Mehbooba Mufti of practicing different politics in Delhi compared to Kashmir.
