Political Tensions Rise as Assam CM Claims Congress Has His Supporters
Political Dynamics in Assam Heat Up
Guwahati, Jan 14: On Wednesday, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reignited his longstanding assertion of having “agents” within the Congress party, expressing his satisfaction if individuals were working for him from within the opposition.
Sarma's comments emerged in the wake of a political upheaval triggered by the resignation of Rejaul Karim Sarkar, a newly joined Congress member, who left the party on January 14, accusing prominent Congress figures, including Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia and Nagaon MP Pradyut Bordoloi, of being “BJP agents.”
Responding to media inquiries during a seed-capital distribution event in Karbi Anglong, Sarma stated, “I would be pleased if individuals support me, and it’s no secret that some do work on my behalf within Congress.”
The Chief Minister also took the opportunity to criticize Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi, suggesting he failed to take appropriate action following Sarkar’s controversial statements.
Referring to Sarkar’s comments regarding Dhubri and Sivasagar, which sparked backlash from various political and civil groups, Sarma remarked that Gogoi, as the MP from Jorhat, should have ensured Sarkar's expulsion from the party before the situation escalated.
“After the remarks made in Dhubri, Gaurav Gogoi should have acted to remove him from Congress. His inaction has allowed Karim to portray himself as a hero. This is why we expected Gogoi to take decisive action, but he lacked the courage,” Sarma added.
This is not the first time Sarma has claimed to have supporters within Congress. He has previously stated that he possesses reliable sources inside the party who provide him with what he calls “first-hand information about internal discussions and strategies.”
In July 2025, Sarma claimed to have knowledge of a private Congress meeting in Guwahati, alleging that senior leader Rahul Gandhi had stated that Sarma would eventually face imprisonment.
“‘Take it in writing, Himanta Biswa Sarma will definitely be sent to jail,’ were the exact words of the Leader of the Opposition,” the Chief Minister had asserted at that time.
Sarma’s recent remarks have intensified the political controversy surrounding Sarkar’s resignation, further straining relations between the ruling BJP and the beleaguered Assam Congress.
