Guwahati, Apr 7: As the deadline for campaigning approaches for the Assam Assembly elections, tensions between the BJP and Congress have intensified significantly.
Law enforcement officials arrived at the residence of Congress leader Pawan Khera in New Delhi following a complaint lodged by Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, the wife of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Reports indicate that a combined team from Delhi and Assam Police was dispatched to Khera’s home, but he was not there, leading to officials waiting outside.
This incident follows a complaint filed by Riniki Bhuyan Sarma at the Pan Bazar Crime Branch in Guwahati, where she accused Khera of making false claims regarding her citizenship and assets.
In response to the police's actions, Chief Minister Sarma, while campaigning in Demow, Sivasagar district, accused Khera of having “fled” the capital.
“Pawan Khera left yesterday morning, taking a 6 am flight from Delhi to Hyderabad,” Sarma stated.
He further claimed that Khera's allegations had been debunked, asserting, “All documents have been proven to be fake. Egypt has confirmed the passport is fraudulent. Dubai has echoed this, and the United States has verified that Riniki owns no assets there. It’s all fabricated. Just a day ago, he challenged us to arrest him, but now he has disappeared,” the Chief Minister added.
The controversy originated from Khera's claims on Sunday, where he alleged that Riniki Bhuyan Sarma held multiple foreign passports, violating Indian citizenship regulations.
During a press conference at the AICC headquarters in New Delhi, Khera accused the Chief Minister’s wife of possessing passports from the UAE, Egypt, and Antigua and Barbuda, along with properties in Dubai and assets in shell companies in the United States.
Riniki Bhuyan Sarma denied these allegations on Monday, confirming that she had filed an FIR and demanded stringent action.
“I have initiated legal proceedings. I have filed an FIR against them. I urge Assam Police to coordinate with the MEA to validate everything. This matter should not be taken lightly. Justice must be served,” she stated.
On April 6, Sarma also claimed during a press conference in Guwahati that the accusations were politically motivated, intended to sway the ongoing elections, and labeled them as “punishable under the law.”
This incident has further escalated the ongoing verbal battle between the BJP and Congress as the election campaigning reaches its climax, introducing a legal aspect to an already charged political environment.
