Political Shifts in Maharashtra: NCP's Potential Changes Amidst Ongoing Turmoil

The political landscape in Maharashtra is witnessing significant changes as the conflict between Shiv Sena factions continues. NCP legislator Dharmarao Atram claims that five MPs from the Sharad Pawar-led faction may join the ruling NCP by December. This potential shift raises questions about the stability of the NCP-SP alliance, especially with the upcoming meeting called by Sharad Pawar to address the current political climate. As discussions unfold, the focus remains on the implications of these changes for Maharashtra's governance and development.

Political Dynamics in Maharashtra

As the conflict between Shiv Sena and Shiv Sena (UBT) continues, discussions surrounding 'Operation Tiger' are prevalent in Maharashtra's political landscape. Additionally, indications of possible political shifts within the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) have begun to surface. NCP legislator Dharmarao Atram has asserted that five MPs from the Sharad Pawar-led NCP (SP) may join the ruling faction of NCP by December.

Atram's Statements on Political Alliances

Atram expressed that many are eager to return by contributing to development initiatives. He anticipates that at least five Lok Sabha MPs will align with them by December 12. There is a growing trust in Sunetra Pawar's leadership, and it has become clear to them that joining forces is essential for bringing development to their constituencies. Atram, a former minister in the Eknath Shinde government, hails from Gadchiroli district. His comments follow a meeting between Deputy CM and NCP president Ajit Pawar's wife, Sunetra Pawar, and Rajya Sabha MP Parth Pawar with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi. Although details of the meeting remain undisclosed, party insiders suggest that the NCP is seeking the finance department in Maharashtra, indicating potential discussions with BJP leadership.

The Importance of Numbers

Currently, the NCP-SP holds nine MPs—eight in the Lok Sabha and one in the Rajya Sabha. According to anti-defection laws, a minimum of two-thirds of elected MPs must support any split within the parliamentary party to avoid disqualification. Given that NCP-SP has eight Lok Sabha MPs, at least six must agree to legally separate and join another faction. The Lok Sabha members include Supriya Sule, Amol Kolhe, Bajrang Sonawane, Nilesh Lanke, Suresh Mhatre, Amar Kale, Bhaskar Bhagre, and Dhairyashil Mohite-Patil.

Pawar Calls for a Meeting

Reports indicate that Sharad Pawar has convened a meeting of the MPs for this very reason. Local media suggests that this meeting could take place within the next two days, aimed at assessing the current political situation and engaging directly with party MPs. However, Pawar has yet to publicly respond to the ongoing turmoil within Shiv Sena (UBT). Meanwhile, Pawar's grandson and legislator Rohit Pawar has criticized the MPs on social media.

Critique of Political Practices

In a post on social media, he emphasized that leaders should focus on pressing issues such as unemployment, farmers' struggles, water scarcity, and women's safety. He also condemned the rising trend of buying and selling MPs and MLAs, asserting that those who betray public trust should be taught a lesson democratically by voters.
