Major Political Shift in Punjab

In a significant political development ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has faced a major setback. Three of its legislators—Harmit Singh Pathanmajra, Chetan Singh Jodhamajra, and Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh—defected to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday. The trio arrived at the BJP headquarters in Delhi, where they raised slogans in support of the BJP before officially joining the party. This event has sparked new discussions in Punjab's political landscape.

Resignations and Discontent

The resignations of these three legislators occurred at different times. Harmit Singh Pathanmajra and Chetan Singh Jodhamajra had previously resigned from AAP on Sunday. Meanwhile, Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh submitted his resignation from the Punjab Assembly on Monday morning.

Following the release of AAP's first list of 40 candidates for the upcoming elections, discontent grew within the party ranks. Notably, candidates for the Sanour, Samana, and Amritsar North seats were not announced, leading to dissatisfaction among party members.

Reasons Behind the Shift

Harmit Singh Pathanmajra cited the BJP's national stature as a reason for his decision, expressing that Punjab could benefit significantly from the party's governance. He also referenced the BJP's commitment to combating drug-related issues in the state.

Both Pathanmajra and Jodhamajra criticized AAP's leadership, particularly targeting Arvind Kejriwal and his close aide, Bibhav Kumar, for interfering in Punjab's administration and governance.

AAP's Response

In light of these defections, AAP has requested the Assembly Speaker to revoke the memberships of the two legislators. The party claims that both Harmit Singh Pathanmajra and Chetan Singh Jodhamajra were already suspended for alleged anti-party activities prior to their resignations.

Political Implications

The inclusion of these three legislators into the BJP is expected to influence the political dynamics in Punjab as the 2027 Assembly elections approach. Observers are keen to see how this shift will affect the positions of various parties within the state.
