Political Maneuvering Intensifies in Bihar Ahead of Rajya Sabha Elections
Political Dynamics in Bihar Post-Elections
Although the elections in Bihar have concluded, political strategies continue to unfold. A significant factor contributing to this ongoing maneuvering is the impending vacancy of five Rajya Sabha seats after March. Each political party is now positioning its candidates for these openings. Out of the five seats, two belong to the RJD, two to the JD(U), and one to the BJP. Currently, it appears that both the BJP and JD(U) are likely to secure two seats each, leaving one seat contested, which is not expected to go to the RJD.
Candidates in the Spotlight
Amidst these developments, discussions around potential candidates in Bihar have gained momentum. Reports suggest that the BJP may not support Upendra Kushwaha for re-election to the Rajya Sabha. Instead, the party might consider Nitin Nawin and Pawan Singh for these positions. Recently appointed as the party's working president, Nitin Nawin's presence in Delhi is deemed essential, making a Rajya Sabha seat a viable option for him. On the other hand, Pawan Singh, who worked diligently during the Bihar elections, is also a strong contender for a seat.
JD(U) Candidates and Rising Political Tensions
Currently, the two JD(U) members in the Rajya Sabha may be trusted again by Nitish Kumar. This is largely due to Harivansh serving as the Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, while Ramnath Thakur holds a ministerial position at the center. It seems unlikely that Kumar will gamble on anyone other than these two at this time. Meanwhile, the political temperature is rising concerning the remaining seat, with Chirag Paswan's mother being a prominent name in discussions. However, securing the necessary support from legislators could be a challenge. Upendra Kushwaha may also express interest in this seat, but he currently has only four legislators backing him, compared to Chirag's 19.
Jitan Ram Manjhi's Demand for a Rajya Sabha Seat
In a surprising move, Union Minister and Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM) leader Jitan Ram Manjhi stirred the political scene by demanding a Rajya Sabha seat for the upcoming elections. Manjhi accused the BJP of failing to fulfill its promise of a Rajya Sabha seat made during the Lok Sabha elections. Although he is the sole Lok Sabha member from HAM, the party recently secured five seats in the Bihar Assembly elections. Manjhi's son, Santosh Kumar Suman, serves as a minister in Nitish Kumar's cabinet, and he has urged his father to hold the BJP accountable for their previous commitments.
