Agartala, Oct 21: A wave of condemnation has swept across political factions following the alleged racial harassment of a young man from Tripura by a social media influencer in Delhi. This incident has sparked significant outrage throughout the Northeast, prompting calls for stringent legal measures against the accused.
Prominent figures such as Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma, the founder of the Tipra Motha Party (TMP), Opposition Leader Jitendra Chaudhury, and senior Congress MLA Birajit Sinha have all expressed their disapproval of the incident involving Instagram user Amir Shokeen, whose video targeting the youth gained viral attention on Tuesday.
The controversial video reportedly features Shokeen making derogatory comments towards the youth, including terms like “chinky,” “China president,” and “Michael Jackson.”
Additionally, it allegedly depicts him using offensive language and engaging in inappropriate physical behavior towards the young tribal man, inciting widespread anger in the region.
Debbarma condemned the actions as an affront to the people of Tripura, particularly criticizing the derogatory alteration of the state's historical name.
“Amir Shokeen has ridiculed our community and even distorted the historic name of Tripura by referring to it as C#%tpura. If this isn’t an insult, what is? I demand appropriate action,” he stated on Facebook.
He urged the youth branches of TMP to file a formal complaint and called for law enforcement to apprehend the accused.
As of the latest updates, the Youth Tipra Federation (YTF) has officially lodged a complaint with the Officer-in-Charge at New Capital Complex Police Station in Agartala, seeking legal action against Shokeen.
The outcry has transcended party lines, with opposition leaders also insisting on accountability.
Chaudhury urged the Delhi Police to take “immediate, strict, and exemplary action” against the influencer, labeling him a “parasitic and racist influencer.”
“Arrest him. Prosecute him to the fullest extent of the law. Set a precedent so clear that no one dares to insult Tripura and the Tiprasa again,” he emphasized in a Facebook post.
Birajit Sinha, a senior Congress MLA, voiced his concerns regarding the normalization of racial profiling and sexual harassment directed at individuals from Northeast India on social media.
“It is deeply troubling to witness such behavior towards a youth from Tripura by Amir Shokeen, who has sunk so low on social media, normalizing racial profiling and sexual harassment against people from NE India,” Sinha remarked on Facebook.
This incident has once again highlighted the ongoing issues of racial abuse faced by individuals from the Northeast, with political leaders from various parties calling for action against the alleged online misconduct.
