Guwahati, Oct 27: On Tuesday, leaders from various opposition parties expressed their concerns regarding the law and order situation in Assam following a tragic shooting incident at a hotel in the Ulubari area of Guwahati, which resulted in five fatalities. They are calling for accountability and severe penalties for those involved.

Gaurav Gogoi, president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), extended his condolences to the families affected by the tragedy, emphasizing that the incident has raised alarming questions about public safety in the city.

In a statement on social media, Gogoi urged Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who also oversees the Home Department, to take responsibility for the escalating crime rates and to address the situation with urgency.

“This incident raises serious concerns about public safety and the law and order situation in Guwahati,” he remarked, calling for a comprehensive investigation to ensure justice for the victims and to implement measures to avert future occurrences.

Meera Borthakur Goswami, president of the Assam Pradesh Mahila Congress, also criticized the government regarding the killings, pointing out the disparity between the administration's claims of effective governance and the reality of a shooting in a central area of the city.

“Five individuals have lost their lives in the heart of Guwahati, in a state led by a powerful Chief Minister!” she remarked sarcastically.

Lurinjyoti Gogoi, president of the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), raised alarms about public safety, questioning how citizens could feel secure if such violence could occur in the state's largest city.

“Who will take responsibility for this horrific incident in Guwahati?” he demanded, urging the government and local authorities to take decisive action against those accountable.

Akhil Gogoi, leader of Raijor Dal, also voiced his concerns and paid homage to the victims, advocating for the harshest penalties for the offenders and urging the government to prevent the accused from evading justice through legal loopholes.

“A thorough investigation is essential to ensure that those responsible are held accountable,” he stated.

The political outcry followed a shooting incident at Hotel Bilas Inn in Ulubari on Monday night, initially reported to have resulted in four deaths, which later increased to five.

Initial investigations indicate that the shooting may have stemmed from a dispute regarding the hotel's lease agreement, with the suspects reportedly having leased the property about a year ago.

Authorities mentioned that the investigation is still in its early stages, with officers looking into the events that led to the shooting.
