Political Landscape Shifts in Tamil Nadu Following TVK's Historic Victory
A New Era in Tamil Nadu Politics
The political dynamics in Tamil Nadu have undergone a significant transformation after the remarkable success of actor-turned-politician Vijay's party, 'Tamilga Vetri Kazhagam' (TVK). This victory has led to the emergence of a new power center in the state, effectively dismantling the long-standing 'Secular Progressive Alliance'. The DMK has accused its former ally, Congress, of 'betrayal', labeling it as a 'backstabber'.
DMK spokesperson Saravanan Annadurai stated that the five assembly seats won by Congress were only possible due to the efforts of the incumbent Chief Minister M.K. Stalin.
Congress Faces Backlash
Using the term 'backstabber' on his X account, Annadurai reminded Congress that it was Stalin who presented Rahul Gandhi as a prime ministerial candidate when BJP/RSS was mocking him as 'Pappu'. This comment was a response to Congress General Secretary K.C. Venugopal's late-night post, which left the decision regarding the alliance to the state unit.
Following this, events in Tamil Nadu rapidly evolved, with sources indicating that the state Congress unit decided to ally with Vijay's TVK.
Conditional Support from Congress
In a virtual meeting, Congress passed a proposal to extend conditional support to TVK, which included demands for cabinet positions and chairmanships of certain boards. A formal letter announcing this support is expected to be released soon, after which Congress legislators may meet Vijay in Panaiyur.
TVK Confirms Alliance
TVK has confirmed that the alliance with Congress is solidified following communication from the party. Sources indicate that Congress MP Karti Chidambaram is overseeing discussions and coordination with TVK.
TVK Emerges as a Major Player
Vijay's two-year-old party, 'Tamilga Vetri Kazhagam' (TVK), has emerged as the largest party in Tamil Nadu with 108 seats, although it falls short of a majority by 11 seats. The party has expressed confidence in forming a government with external support, completely dismissing the possibility of an ideological alliance with BJP and viewing DMK as its primary rival.
Vijay Reaches Out to Other Parties
In this context, Vijay has reached out to Congress and other parties that were part of the DMK-led 'Secular Progressive Alliance' before the elections, including VCK, CPI, CPI(M), and IUML. In the 234-member assembly, IUML, CPI, CPI(M), and VCK each secured two seats. Previously, Vijay's father, S.A. Chandrasekhar, had openly appealed to Congress to ally with TVK, stating that the actor-politician could restore the power they had lost.
A Call for Unity
He emphasized that Congress has a rich history and tradition, questioning why it is weakening due to a lack of power. By supporting another party, they risk becoming weaker. 'We will provide that power—no, not just us, but Vijay is ready to deliver it. If you regain that power, Congress can preserve its legacy. They should seize this opportunity,' he stated.
Rising Tensions Between Congress and DMK
The tension between Congress and DMK, which was evident before the elections, has now become more pronounced as Stalin's party has been sidelined from this equation. The roots of this rift trace back to when DMK rejected Congress's proposal regarding power-sharing just before the elections. Now that TVK is seeking support, the state Congress unit has finally made its decision, signaling the end of its alliance with DMK.
