Political Drama Unfolds in Tamil Nadu as Vijay Struggles for Majority

The political scene in Tamil Nadu is currently marked by intense drama as actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay attempts to secure a majority for government formation. Despite being the largest party in the assembly, Vijay faces significant hurdles, including conflicting support from various political factions. With the Congress backing him under specific conditions and the CPI offering conditional support for stable governance, the situation remains fluid. The Indian Union Muslim League's initial support followed by withdrawal adds to the complexity. As Vijay navigates these challenges, the outcome of this political saga remains uncertain, raising questions about the future of governance in Tamil Nadu.

Political Turmoil in Tamil Nadu

The political landscape in Tamil Nadu resembles a dramatic film scene as actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay attempts to claim government formation. Each time he visits the Raj Bhavan, Governor Rajendra Arlekar entangles him in complex Shakespearean dilemmas. Despite three meetings over the past three days, Vijay has yet to present a decisive majority in this theatrical game. With 108 seats, the TVK (Tamil Nadu Vanniyar Katchi) is the largest party in the 234-member assembly, but Vijay's victory in only two seats and the necessity to leave one vacant has created a technical barrier to his ascension. To reach the majority mark of 118, TVK is currently striving to secure an additional 11 seats from smaller parties within the DMK-led coalition and former allies. Initial reports suggested that support from leftist parties and indications of backing from the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi had allowed TVK to cross the majority threshold. However, confusion arose when the VCK failed to issue a formal letter of support, and disputes emerged regarding a purported support letter from the Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam. AMMK leader TTV Dhinakaran later accused TVK supporters of circulating a "fake" letter claiming his party's backing, reiterating that their sole MLA supports the NDA coalition led by AIADMK. Sources indicate that the governor is unwilling to invite Vijay to form the government without written support from at least 118 legislators. Conflicting statements from potential allies, ambiguous support letters, and contradictory claims from rival factions have further delayed the process.

Congress Backs Vijay with Conditions

After parting ways with the DMK-led coalition, Congress became the first major party to formally support TVK, albeit with specific political conditions. The party emphasized that its backing hinges on TVK distancing itself from "communal forces," implicitly referring to the BJP and NDA. Tamil Nadu Congress President K. Selva Perunthagai later revealed that TVK had offered Congress two ministerial positions and one Rajya Sabha seat. Congress also indicated that the alliance would continue for future local body and parliamentary elections. However, the five Congress MLAs alone were insufficient to elevate Vijay to the majority threshold.

CPI Offers Conditional Support for Stable Governance

The Communist Party of India announced its support for Vijay, framing it as a move to ensure "stable, secular, and democratic governance" in Tamil Nadu. CPI State Secretary M. Veerapandian stated that this decision was made to honor the public mandate and prevent political instability or presidential rule. The party clarified that it would support the government from outside and would not seek cabinet positions.

CPI(M) Provides Unconditional External Support

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) formally declared its support for TVK's government formation, emphasizing that it would remain outside the cabinet. CPI(M) State Secretary P. Shanmugam noted that leftist parties intervened to avoid prolonged uncertainty and to prevent a potential "secret entry" of the BJP into Tamil Nadu politics. The Marxist party also stated that it would maintain its ideological alliance with DMK on issues related to state rights and federalism.

IUML Initially Supported, Then Withdraws

The Indian Union Muslim League initially indicated support for Vijay's government formation efforts but later publicly distanced itself from TVK, exacerbating the ongoing confusion. IUML's statements were interpreted as indirect support for Vijay, mentioning that its two MLAs would back the governor's initiatives towards government formation. Some leftist leaders also claimed that IUML had provided support letters to assist TVK in achieving a majority.
