Political Dispute Arises Over Anthem Sequence

A political controversy has emerged in Tamil Nadu during the oath-taking ceremony of newly appointed ministers held at Lok Bhavan on Thursday. The issue revolves around the sequence in which the state song 'Tamil Thai Vaazhthu' was played, following 'Vande Mataram' and the national anthem. Leaders from the Communist Party of India, the Marxist Communist Party, and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam have raised objections, asserting that traditionally, the Tamil state anthem is sung at the beginning of government events.

Previous Incidents of Controversy

A similar dispute arose on May 10 during Chief Minister Vijay's oath-taking ceremony, where it was reported that 'Vande Mataram' and 'Jana Gana Mana' were sung before the Tamil state anthem. CPI state secretary M. Veerapandian emphasized that the Governor of Tamil Nadu should prioritize the Tamil anthem, considering the sentiments of the Tamil people.

Calls for Respecting Tamil Sentiments

Veerapandian reiterated to reporters that the Governor should focus more on giving precedence to the Tamil anthem. While expressing respect for the national anthem, he insisted that the Tamil anthem should be prioritized in government functions. He defended the state government against accusations, stating that the state assembly respects the Tamil anthem, which is appropriate. He urged the Governor and the central government to honor the feelings of the Tamil populace.

DMK's Response to Allegations

DMK spokesperson Kanimozhi N.V.N. Somu accused the incident of reflecting disrespect towards the Tamil language and identity. He stated that this shows the administration's disregard for Tamil and Tamil Nadu. He noted that during the DMK's tenure, any form of disrespect towards the language was never tolerated, highlighting the mistreatment by the Governor. Meanwhile, newly appointed TVK minister N. Mary Wilson strongly defended the state government, asserting that the arrangement of the events was not entirely under their control. The finance minister clarified that both ceremonies (on May 10 and May 21) were organized by the Governor's office, with no involvement from the state government.
