Political Controversy Erupts Over Police Encounter in Ghaziabad Murder Case

The police killing of a suspect in a teenager's murder case in Ghaziabad has triggered a heated political debate, with accusations of religious bias in law enforcement. Opposition leaders argue that the police response is selective, depending on the victim's religion. Asad, the main suspect, was shot during a police operation after being on the run for weeks. The incident has led to further arrests and the demolition of the suspect's alleged illegal property. This situation raises critical questions about the fairness of police actions in Uttar Pradesh.

Ghaziabad Murder Case Sparks Political Debate

The police shooting of the main suspect in the murder of a teenager on Eid has ignited a significant political controversy in Ghaziabad. Opposition parties are accusing the Uttar Pradesh police of conducting encounters selectively based on religious lines. The primary suspect, Asad, was killed in a police encounter late Saturday night. He had been on the run since the stabbing death of 17-year-old Surya Pratap Chauhan on May 28, and there was a reward of ₹50,000 for information leading to his capture. During a joint operation by the police teams from Khoda and Indirapuram, Asad was injured in a retaliatory gunfire and was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Abu Asim Azmi, the president of the Maharashtra Samajwadi Party, criticized the police encounters in Uttar Pradesh, claiming they are influenced by a specific religious bias. He argued that if the victim had been Muslim, the response would not have been so swift. Azmi stated, "This is absolutely wrong... a particular methodology has been established. If they are indeed criminals, they should be punished. If the crime is of a serious nature, they should face the death penalty, but the Constitution provides a specific process for this... However, in Uttar Pradesh, it appears to be carried out with a specific religious bias."

He further commented that if a Muslim is murdered, the police do not act immediately, but if a Hindu is killed, regardless of whether the perpetrator is Muslim or from another community, the police response is rapid. This approach is unacceptable, and religion should not be dragged into such matters. All criminals, regardless of their faith—be it Muslim, Hindu, Sikh, Christian, Parsi, or others—should be treated equally without discrimination.

In related developments, the Ghaziabad district administration initiated the demolition of the alleged illegal residence of the main suspect on Monday, just a day after his death in the police encounter. Officials posted a 15-day notice outside the property, stating that it was built on government land and instructing the occupants to vacate. This action is part of a broader campaign targeting properties linked to criminal activities. Additionally, three other individuals have been arrested in connection with the case, including the suspect's 45-year-old father and two associates, Farhan and Atif, both aged 19. The father is currently in judicial custody.
