A bedridden resident of Mandi has been erroneously marked as deceased in official records, resulting in the suspension of his welfare benefits. The opposition is calling for accountability and the immediate reinstatement of his assistance.
In a troubling incident that has ignited political tensions and raised significant concerns about administrative efficiency in Himachal Pradesh, a severely disabled man was reportedly declared dead in government documents. This error led to the cessation of financial support he was receiving under the Chief Minister Sahara Scheme.
The situation came to light when Suresh Kumar's family, who resides in Chhadyand village within the Seraj Assembly constituency of Mandi district, sought help from former Chief Minister and current Leader of Opposition, Jairam Thakur. They described their plight as a serious injustice.
Suresh Kumar has been battling a debilitating condition for nearly nine years after a fall from a tree resulted in severe spinal and neurological injuries. Despite receiving treatment at various medical facilities, including Zonal Hospital Mandi and PGIMER Chandigarh, his health has continued to decline.
His family reported that Kumar has lost all mobility and is now entirely bedridden, unable to move or speak, and reliant on others for his daily needs. The ongoing medical treatment has placed a heavy financial burden on the family, leading them into debt.
Under the Sahara Scheme, initiated by the previous BJP administration, critically ill patients were provided with monthly financial aid to assist with treatment and caregiving costs. Kumar had been a beneficiary of this scheme for several years.
However, the family claims that during the current Congress government's administration, Kumar was mistakenly recorded as deceased, resulting in the termination of his financial support. His wife, Saina Devi, reached out to Jairam Thakur with a written account of their struggles and financial hardships.
Thakur expressed disbelief over the alleged mistake, questioning how a living person could be declared dead in official records and stripped of essential benefits meant for vulnerable individuals. He labeled the situation as a significant administrative failure and has reportedly contacted relevant officials to rectify the mistake promptly and restore the necessary assistance.
Additionally, the Leader of Opposition provided financial help to the family and pledged support for Kumar's medical treatment and the education of his children.
Dr. Sadhana Thakur, a national member of the Indian Red Cross Management Committee and spouse of the former Chief Minister, also offered to supply an airbed to enhance Kumar's comfort and care.
This incident has sparked renewed political discourse in the state, with the opposition accusing the government of insensitivity and administrative negligence. The family is now awaiting corrective measures from the authorities and the reinstatement of the welfare assistance they deem crucial for Kumar's care and survival.
