Guwahati, Oct 6: The main suspect in the death of 22-year-old Nimisha Thakuriya was injured during a police shooting at Dharapur early Tuesday morning while allegedly trying to flee from custody.

Aashique Ali, aged 26, suffered two gunshot injuries to his right leg as a result of the police action and was subsequently transported to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) after receiving initial care at Garal.

He has been admitted to the Orthopaedics Department and is reported to be in stable condition.

According to GMCH Superintendent Devajit Choudhury, Ali arrived at the hospital around 5:30 am.

“He is being treated as a patient. Initially, he was taken to Garal PHC and later referred to GMCH. He has gunshot wounds to his right knee and ankle,” Choudhury stated.

This police shooting occurred shortly after Ali's arrest in connection with Thakuriya’s death, for which he had been remanded in police custody for eight days.

Nimisha was discovered unconscious at a homestay in the Garal-Dharapur region in the early hours of September 26.

She was taken to Garal Primary Health Centre around 4:30 am and later referred to GMCH, where she was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Ali, who had reportedly been staying at the homestay with Nimisha, was arrested following the incident.

During his interrogation, he allegedly informed investigators that Nimisha had taken her own life by hanging herself from a ceiling fan.

The investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death is ongoing.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma indicated that statements from Nimisha’s parents would be integral to the investigation.

“The girl is from my constituency, and all statements made on social media, including those from her parents, will be considered. The investigation will proceed, and I will ensure it is conducted thoroughly,” Sarma remarked during a press briefing in Raha.

Sarma also mentioned that an inquiry into the incident would be initiated, and appropriate actions would be taken by the police.

Authorities are currently analyzing evidence gathered from the homestay to clarify the events leading to Nimisha’s death.
