Biswanath, Sept 15: Local authorities successfully rescued a 10-year-old girl from Arunachal Pradesh after she was reportedly abducted from the Nilpur Tea Garden. Two suspects have been apprehended in connection with this case.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Arjun Gowala from Nilpur and Bhaiti Nayak from Pratapgarh, both of whom are now in judicial custody.
The young girl, a Class II student, was allegedly taken while she was playing outside. At the time, her parents were working as laborers at the tea garden.
According to police reports, the child was transported to Arunachal Pradesh, where there were plans to sell her for Rs 50,000.
Biswanath's Superintendent of Police, Asif Ahmed, stated that local MLA Pallab Lochan Das alerted him about the kidnapping and the potential trafficking of the child.
“Pallab Lochan Das informed us that a 10-year-old girl had been abducted from a tea garden. There were concerns she might be trafficked and sold in Arunachal Pradesh. We acted swiftly and dispatched a special team to locate her,” Ahmed explained.
The police team successfully located and rescued the girl in Arunachal Pradesh. She was found in good health and was later reunited with her mother at the district Superintendent of Police's office in Biswanath.
Ahmed noted that one of the suspects, Gowala, had a history of serious offenses, including previous murder charges and involvement in another human trafficking case.
“This is not Gowala's first alleged involvement in human trafficking; he had previously sold another 10-year-old girl in Arunachal Pradesh for Rs 50,000. That case is currently under investigation,” the SP added.
Authorities are continuing their investigation to uncover the details surrounding this incident and to identify any additional individuals involved in the trafficking network.
This rescue has highlighted the ongoing issue of human trafficking in the region, prompting MLA Pallab Lochan Das to call for increased vigilance and immediate reporting of suspicious activities.
“I extend my gratitude to the Biswanath police and SP Asif Ahmed for their dedicated efforts in safely recovering the girl. Human trafficking is a significant issue in this area, with numerous cases reported,” Das stated.
He emphasized that traffickers often exploit poverty and vulnerability, luring or abducting children and women to transport them to cities outside the state.
“We must enhance public awareness. Traffickers exploit the vulnerable and transport victims to cities like Bengaluru and Delhi, sometimes using trains. We need to stay alert and intensify our efforts against human trafficking,” Das urged.
Das also mentioned plans to expand awareness initiatives at the grassroots level to prevent trafficking and better inform vulnerable families.
“We will promote awareness about human trafficking at the panchayat and ward levels throughout Biswanath. We are committed to supporting this young girl in her education and healthcare,” Das concluded.
