Authorities have made a crucial advancement in the investigation of the murder of Chandranath Rath, a former Air Force officer and close aide to the Leader of the Opposition in West Bengal, Suvendu Adhikari. The inquiry has expanded its reach to Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, leading to the arrest of a suspect from Ayodhya, who is believed to have connections with interstate criminal gangs. Investigators have successfully apprehended Raj Singh, a resident of Ballia in Uttar Pradesh, through a collaborative effort between the Kolkata and Ayodhya police. Reports indicate that Singh had been hiding in Bihar's Buxar district following the murder on May 6.

Following his arrest, Singh was transported to Kolkata for further questioning. As the investigation progressed, the Special Task Force (STF) of West Bengal conducted raids in Buxar, where they detained Vishal Srivastava, a notorious criminal with multiple charges, including murder and violations of the Arms Act. After interrogation in Kolkata, Srivastava was released by the authorities.

Digital Clue Emerges

In a significant turn of events, investigators have uncovered a vital digital clue. A UPI payment allegedly made by the suspects at a toll plaza in Bally, near Kolkata, has surfaced as a key piece of evidence. Authorities are currently reviewing CCTV footage from the toll booth to track the movements of the suspects before and after the murder.

Details of the Murder

Chandranath Rath was shot dead near his residence in Madhyamgram, located in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. According to investigators, Rath's SUV was intercepted approximately 200 meters from his home by a silver Nissan Micra, which blocked his path. As the SUV came to a halt, assailants on motorcycles reportedly opened fire at close range, resulting in Rath's immediate death in the front passenger seat.

Authorities suspect that the attackers had prior knowledge of Rath's movements and seating arrangements, indicating that the murder was premeditated.

Recovery of Evidence

The police have recovered the silver Nissan Micra believed to have been used in the crime, along with two motorcycles—one found near the crime scene and the other recovered from Barasat. Initial investigations suggest that the vehicles used in the attack and subsequent escape may have been stolen.
