Police Encounter Leads to Death of Suspect in AASU Member's Murder

Nalbari, June 1: The main suspect in the murder of Madhurjya Barman, a member of the All Assam Students' Union (AASU), was killed on Monday during a police encounter in Nalbari district.


Identified as Rose Ali, the suspect was located in a char area of Mukalmua, where he was reportedly hiding.


During the police operation to capture him, Ali allegedly tried to seize a firearm from the officers, prompting them to fire in self-defense.


He suffered severe injuries and was quickly transported to a local hospital, where he ultimately died from significant blood loss.


This encounter marks a rapid and dramatic development in a case that has sparked widespread public outrage in Nalbari since June 1.


The murder of Barman led to protests throughout the district, with many residents demanding justice.


A local resident, present at Nalbari Medical College and Hospital awaiting Barman's body, expressed that the anger over the incident was palpable across the area.


“We demanded justice, and within a day, we learned that the suspect had been injured in a police encounter and later died. This is seen as a significant step forward in the case,” he stated.


Nalbari MLA Jayanta Malla Baruah referred to the incident as a case of “Love Jihad” in a social media post, urging the community to stay alert.


“Love Jihad is becoming a serious social issue in Assam. We must all be vigilant and ensure that strict actions are taken against such occurrences. The tragic event in Gangapur, Nalbari, has shocked us all. The police are responding promptly, and we trust that Assam Police will take appropriate measures,” he wrote.


Barman's cousin, Mridumudra Deka, remains in critical condition at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).


Baruah also mentioned that the state government would provide all necessary assistance for her medical care.


“I met with the deceased's father and brother and assured them of the government's complete support. The police are conducting a thorough investigation to determine if the suspect had any accomplices,” he informed the press at GMCH.


In response to the incident, various organizations, including Hindu Suraksha Sena, Bajrang Dal, and Vishwa Hindu Parishad, organized protests and blocked the Kumarikata road, demanding justice and stringent action in the case.
