Police Crackdown on Illegal Activities at Spa Centers in Silchar

Silchar, June 26: Authorities have apprehended the proprietors of two spa and beauty parlors and taken 26 women into custody following a raid on two locations within a shopping mall in Silchar, Assam, due to suspected illegal operations.


The police conducted the raids on Thursday after receiving specific intelligence, focusing on Lovely Spa Centre and Lotus Spa Centre located in the Imperial Shopping Mall, which has raised concerns about the rapidly expanding spa industry in the area.


During a press briefing on Friday, Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Rajat Pal stated that law enforcement had obtained reliable information regarding illicit activities occurring in certain spas within the town.


“The 26 women detained during the operation were transported to Silchar Sadar Police Station for further questioning and verification,” Pal explained.


The owners of the spas, identified as Puja Das and Hirak Debnath, have been arrested.


A case has been filed at Silchar Sadar Police Station (Case No. 584/2026) under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act (ITPA).


"We have confiscated several objectionable items from the spas. The investigation is ongoing," Pal noted.


Details regarding the nature of the seized items have not been disclosed, as they are part of the ongoing evidence examination.


Pal also advised the public to be cautious when visiting spa and wellness centers, urging customers to verify that these establishments have valid licenses and comply with legal regulations.


This operation has sparked discussions about the swift proliferation of spa centers in Silchar, with allegations that some may be involved in illegal activities.


Investigators are currently assessing whether the 26 women were employees, clients, or potential victims of trafficking or exploitation. Officials emphasized that no conclusions will be reached until the verification process is finalized and their statements are documented.
